What would make my 2003 navigator transmission stop working completely while driving down the road with no warning?

I was driving down the road when the RPM's went real high and the
transmission just stopped working completely. I pulled over and it won't do
anything in drive or reverse. It gave no warning of any problems other than
bucking randomly every now and then. Please help

It sounds like your transmission is burned out. You could do a complete change (no flush) and filter as a last resort, it may come back to life. Some Lincolns also have a torque converter drain, which will enable a more complete job. If that doesn't work some additives may help.

Would that make the transfer case also not kick in?

That is correct, the tranny must work for the transfer case to function.

2003 lincoln navigator. i have a tapping noise coming from the rear end of the car it usually only happens when the car is in drive or reverse or taking tight turns at low speed and even sitting at idle at a stop light.
