intermittent non start in cold weather

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

have a 95 Explorer close to 300K miles. Last year (New Year's eve) the thing would not start at all. The shop replace the fuel pump and all was good. This cols season (NW Montana), the thing still won't start at times. Always stats in the garage in the morning, but after driving it a bit (hot engine) then stopping and having it sit to either a luke warn or cold engine, it won't start (but not always). Turns out, spraying a dose of ether in the air cleaner (or whatever the thing is called, up front, toward the front bumper, on the passenger side of the engine) allows it to start (yes, it should not work, but does). The repair shop replace the fuel pump and pretty much all the electronics that work with it and is stumped. A different shop, hearing the issue and what the one shop did, equally stumped. Any ideas out there what the issue is?

I have seen those fords be just a little low on coolant so the ECM does not know what the temperature of the Engine is and it does not deliver the right amount Of fuel

hmmm - I will check on the coolant issue, and maybe the sensor itself is just on its way out? Unfortunately, we are having a spell of "warm" weather (upper 30's) and this problem happens with below freezing temps - next week should be better for testing.... :-) thank you both for the tips.
