Ignition switch

Asked by Keith Aug 02, 2018 at 06:43 PM about the 1996 Ford Taurus

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I put my key in the ignition and turned it .. All my
panel lights came on then I continued to turn it and
nothing happened ... I also couldn't turn it off
without unplugging my battery just not sure if I
have to replace the cylinder or the ignition starter
... it seems like there is no position 2 or 3

Check battery voltage, it should be minimum 12.4. Check the battery cables for corrosion and make sure they're tight. If cables are ok, check voltage signal at the starter solenoid as you try to start it. Most likely, the cables are dirty or loose and battery charge is low.
