How reliable is the G37 Infiniti?
20 Answers
We had a 2009 G37X sedan for 6 years since new. Mechanically it was perfect and never returned to the dealer for any repair. The 3.7 engine makes about 328 HP and it was fun and comfortable to drive. It got 27 mpg at 65 to 70 miles per hour on fairly flat 2 lane roads. The 2010 uses the same engine and transmission and if it has properly been serviced it should last a good long time.

I've had an '09 G37x and now a '13 G37xS, and can verify with my other pro mechanics that the G37 is one of the most reliable autos ever produced anywhere by anybody. Even brake rotors last longer than expected! On the negative side the twin exhaust will get a bit laborious to deal with after a bunch of salty winters. That said, it's a pig on fuel in the city, and really should run on premium (although many don't). Handling is excellent, but steering has a dull center-feel, regardless of what tire/wheel tricks are played (I've tried them all). Note that the cheapest important upgrade is to replace the skinny rear antisway bar with the fatter one from the G37 Coupe. You'll be amazed at how the rear end now feels tied to the car better. I run stock 225/50-18 front and 245/45-18 rear from the Coupe also for a more neutral stance in the twisties. Note that this staggered geometry does NOT screw up the ATTESA AWD system, despite what Nervous Nellies suggest. I often suggest to my Subaru customers that this is the "Super Subaru" it should make if it had the money to, as it's alum parts and solidity greatly exceed the otherwise-fine Legacy 3.6R Sedan. At current ultracheap fuel prices G37's are quite viable, but I won't keep ours once gas retraces to rationality. At that point we'll probably chase a Legacy Limited 2.5i, put it on V rubber, and miss the G's blstering acceleration as we get +35% better fuel eco. It's interesting to note that Infiniti tried to play this game with the G25 years ago, but no one wanted the Altima's 2.5 in exchange for $5k savings. The Legacy Limited is a full $8k cheaper. So you either aim high with the loaded G37x (S if you want seat memory and 18" wheels) or low with a Leg Ltd. In normal driving they're interchangeable.... Lastly, the stock 17" wheels with all-season tires underperform with the G. 225/55R17 is ok for winter use (as I did with the '09), but I've since dumped those extra wheels to use 18" solely. The stiffer wheel size improves turn-in , and with the stiffer rear Coupe OE swaybar body control is satisfying and competitive with the 3 Series and A4...and SO much more reliable!
I'm selling a 2010 G37 Journey Coupe and it's the most fun and easy car to drive I've every had. Mechanically perfect and never any reduction in performance over the time I've owned it. Everything always worked! Great sounding motor....nice subtle low growl when accelerating. Gas mileage is as expected......17mpg city, 22-23mpg highway, up to 25mpg on long highway trips. Need to use premium gas or at least alternate fill ups with mid-grade gas
Does it really matter to put premium gas on a g37 infinite

I wonder too. Years ago...when prices spiked...I alternated premium (93) with regular (87) to get a 90.5 octane (it's not linear), which was cheaper and better than midgrade (89). Maybe I'll try it again....
Pinging sounds benign. Preignition sounds less benign, and can destroy an engine. Under normal conditions, in an unmodified G37, the type of gas probably won’t be an issue. I doubt if one could notice a performance issue between the two grades of fuel. However, if your Nissan VQ engine is modified, especially if tuned, the 93 octane requirement isn’t to boost performance, it is to prevent preignition which can destroy these high compression ratio, high performance engines by perforating a piston due to a diesel omg type explosion in the cylinder too far before TDC (Top dead center) the momentum of the rotating parts of the engine drive the piston higher, increasing the pressure in the combustion chamber engine the weakest point, the top of the piston, creates an escape route for the gases. Not good.
I have a 2011 G37S, has 254000 miles and never been in the shop. Still going strong. Only put 92/93 in it.
had a g37x for 10 years. 63,000 miles only routine maintenance(oil changes) - great car

Just sold my '13 G37xS after installing an Injen CAI and running staggered from with fatter swaybar from Coupe. At $15.5k my customer was giddy with satisfaction. 2016 Q50 3.0t will be coming off leases in about 6 mos. Not sure I'll bite if the DAS isn't satisfactory. May still be a decent choice in the interim until used 340i and G70 abound in 2022? Oy.
My g37 from 2012 only serivce once a year ( Reguler ) batery last 8 Years !!!

Install the Coupe's fatter rear swaybar for better handling for only $100!
I’ll be getting a 2010 G37 convertible. Great seeing how dependable these cars are. Mine has the 19 inch wheels and tires on it, I’ll be getting some Kumho tires for it from tire rack.com and having them to a dealer just a few miles away to be installed. These things ride like some of the 3rd Gen Trans Am’s I used to have! Expansion joints will REALLY get your attention!!!! I like the looks of these Infinity’s, hopefully it’ll last a while.

I just bought an 09 G37S coupe with 250K miles and not much service history. I would really like to service the tranny. What are everyone thoughts on said service?
My first car will be my dads 09 g37 sedan. My question is it has 188k miles on it now. It’s never had any problems always been up to date on oil changes and anything that needed updates on. My question is how many more miles do you guys think i could get out of it?

Are you in the rust belt? Than assume maybe 4 more winters. Outside? Maybe 300k. You can nicely improve the handling by reducing understeer and body roll by installing the Coupe's fatter rear swaybar, and by using 225/50R18 rubber on the OE wheels. If you get the Coupe's staggered 18" wheels you can nicely go 225/50r18 f and 245/45r18 rear with NO untoward AWD negatives. Done it for years. Stay away from stupidly-rough 19" wheels. The 3.7 has nice dual air intakes, so don't bother with CAI or sport exhaust wastefulness. Just get that swaybar and run 18's. Have fun.

I have a 2010 G37S with 256000 miles + and counting. I drive it hard and at times on surfaces where its not supposed to go. Did cross continental trips with it from the US in to Canada and Mexico on top of my daily drive to work. Keep up the maintenance and you will have no issues.
I bought a 2013 G37x five years ago for $20k. Just died. Had 120k miles on it and the transmission failed. Not repairable (for less than $8k). Seems coolant leaked into the tranny. I had just put $1200 into it for new brakes and was looking forward to getting another 30k miles out of it. Never again, Infiniti.

Get over it. Chase a used trans and get it installed, or move on. They're great vehicles if you can swallow their thirstiness.

Hey Guru, I may be stupid, but I'm not an idiot. Of course I tried looking for a used tranny. Guess what? Nissan has a computer board that controls the transmissions and must be reprogramed when installed; they won't allow anyone else to reprogram it. And many shops will not install used trannys for you in the first place because the used market has quite a few stolen units in it.

That's silly. Just get the TCM from the same car as the tranny so they'll match.
