Lots of smoke from exhaust when starting

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Went to start my car this morning, but it did not
take. Thinking it was the battery I turned the key
again and pressed the gas  and it started, but when
it did a lot of smoke(white) rose from the exhaust
pipe. Please help give ideas of what it could be.
