What causes 2009 GMC Sierra alert light "tire sensor needs service?"

On snowy road, the 2009 GMC Sierra was difficult to put into 4-W drive and at
the same time a light came on the dash saying a tire sensor needs service.

Tire pressure could be below normal, or a sensor battery could have died so you probably need to replace a sensor.
