Woodruff key removal

Asked by jdhlude Mar 26, 2016 at 11:10 AM about the 2001 Honda Prelude

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an 01 Prelude with an h23a swap.
Crankshaft pulley was wobbling so I took it
off and found the woodruff key chipped
and half shredded off. Which had ended up
shredding up the inside of the pulley. I have
all new parts and everything I need to have
off. But they woodruff key is stuck. I have
tried vice grips, but since it's sheared I
barely have anything to grab onto. Tapping
it hasn't gotten me a where because there
is no way to get behind it. Any other ways I
might be able to get it out?

Remove the key-way and/or its remains by all means necessary. Take a narrow flat blade driver and disrupt whatever is left in the crank groove. The key-way is replaceable....but remember that if it sheared...the motor may have operated, "Out of Time." Even a single tooth can be a bad thing. Reassemble, re-time, and check compression. You may be ALL GOOD....
