Head Gasket Teplaceet + Timing Belt

Asked by DanielleShouldaKeptM... Aug 11, 2018 at 12:27 PM about the 2009 Subaru Forester

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The dealership quoted me 2100 for a head gasket
replacement.  I have a quote coming in from an
independent shop on Monday. Since my car has
122k miles and I haven’t yet replaced the timing
belt, I would be replacing these two components at
the same time. If the cost is in the mid teens I’m
thinking of keeping my car but I’ve its 2k +, I’m
considering selling it. I’m leery of putting good
money after bad. Do you guys have any advice in
what you would choose in that situation and if I am
able to sell my car, what should I expect to fetch for
it?

There should be no additional labor to install the timing belt. The belt cost is under $100 but I would buy the kit for a little over $100 and install the new water pump and idler wheels while the car is apart. An honest mechanic should not charge anymore than the timing belt parts cost when you are doing the head gaskets.
