2002 Taurus SES electrical system problem--bad fuse or bad grounding?

Asked by ses2002 Jun 22, 2018 at 05:59 PM about the 2002 Ford Taurus

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 Taurus SES has an electrical problem.
Is any or all of what I've listed below linked to 1+ bad fuses, or bad/faulty
grounding?
What DOES still work:  headlights; doorlocks & power windows, but. . .;
What DOES NOT work:  windshield wipers; radio/CD player; rear window
defogger; lighter; door ajar signal.
Sometimes, seat belt signal does not work.
Before this problem happened, there were times while driving the doors
would repeatedly unlock and re-lock on their own; sometimes, dome light &
panel lights would not turn off , or would turn back on again without any
"prompting".
PLUS:  I can lock doors using the button, but they will not lock automatically
while driving.
PLUS:  Power windows will work after a couple of minutes.
Also: dome light will usually not work when driver door is open; left rear door
will not unlock automatically all the time; AND
Keys cannot manually open either L or R from doors--they can be unlocked
remotely.
How can I best solve this problem effectively?

Would get a wiring diagram if your going at it alone. If not have a factory service scan done, may save lots of time. From what you mentioned it could be module related such as the GEM module. Would also check for water infiltration and dried out or cracked wiring to harness. Good Luck!

UPDATE: A friend recently tried to install a replacement ignition switch, but that effort did not work —with one exception. Temporarily, the warning bell when I leave the key in the ignition did work. The friend tried a second time to install a different switch, but no changes. But a problem I had with the Taurus before the radio, wipers, etc., went out came back. At least once that I know about. This problem happened at least several times in the months & weeks beforehand. I would return home, turn off the ignition. But the dome light, the dashboard lights, and the lights for both side/door mirrors came on. I found the best way to deal with this problem was to slam the driver door shut, then use the remote lock button. There were times, though, when it took several tries to finally get the lights to stay turned off; on such occasions, the same lights would come back on. Sometimes a minute or so would pass before they lit up again. Slamming the other doors shut had little if any effect—it had to be the driver’s door. A neighbor told me that at least once she saw these same lights come on and remain on for a few minutes, then go out, it seemed, by themselves. With this additional information, does this help clarify whether the problem is with one or more fuses, with loose or badly grounded wires, with the GEM, or some other source?

Not getting power to my starter to start. Relay will click when I try to start. 2002 Ford Taurus
