I found this - it's supposed to be in both places. "the VIN on a 55' f-100 is on the inside of the glove box door. You may also find it on top of the drivers side frame rail, between the firewall and the steering gear box."

It may also be on the rad support as well as on the driver's door frame. It is likely to be stamped into the metal, and not easy to see, especially if the vehicle has been restored or repainted.

The VIN 1s actually only 11 digits. It Is on the top of the right (passenger) frame, 52.5 " back from the front end of the frame. It starts and ends with an asterisk. First 3 digits are F10 for the F100. Good luck. Gary

I found the VIN on my 55 F100 exactly were you said, 52.5 inches from the front of the frame on the passenger side.
