I have a 1961 mercury comet that stalls when i put
it in reverse or drive but idles pretty well. Please
help

Could be any number of things, Will it move at all if you give it gas? If not, then maybe the torque converter is locked up, or if it moves a little , then maybe a brake is locked up,, If it moves when you give it gas its likely the vacuum modulator
