I have a 76 Buick Century with a 455 big block with a 350 transmission and would like to know why it's taking long to switch to second gear

That trany runs on vacuum, check the line down from the vacuum source to the vacuum modulator on the trany, if all good replace that vacuum modulator on the trany, good idea to change the fluid and filter also.
