how do I report a dealer

Asked by PAUL Jan 11, 2024 at 02:40 PM about the 2016 BMW X1 xDrive28i AWD

Question type: General

CarHouse on Rt 23 in Kinnelon NJ sold this car with unsecure engine
mounts, defective transmission, mismatched and mismounted tires, non
functioning emergency brake and has taken weeks to attempt to repair the
problems. I was compensated for tire replacement after I complained and
they have sent the car to a mechanic to attempt repairs of the remaining
three critical issues. I have been without a safe car to drive from late October
through present time Jan 11, 2024. The dealership never looked at this car
and sold it in its dangerous condition and have delayed the repairs through
Nov and Dec and it is in a repair shop now and am unsure if they will repair
these defects or just keep getting run around claiming that their specialty
mechanic in another town of Paterson, could not get to it or some other
deflection. I have had to go back and forth to their primary mechanic in
Bloomingdale about four or five times and left my car with them twice before
they allowed me to bring my car to a new car dealership which found these
mechanical failures but they would not allow BMW to repair the vehicle and
sent me to this Paterson based mechanic. I am filing a complaint with NJ
consumer affairs and waiting to see if I have to litigate this issue in the
Special Civil Part if they refuse to repair these things which were promised to
me when I purchased the car. They said that they would take care of these
major issues. I am hoping that they do but the fact that they sold this car with
these defects has to be documented since it put me and my family at risk.
Thanks

Filing a complaint with your local Office of Consumer Affairs was the right thing to do. Unfortunately, if you bought the vehicle as is there's really not much you can do. This is why it's so important to check out a used vehicle very carefully before you buy it or have it inspected by a professional inspection company. Also, in New Jersey, if this vehicle has over 100,000 miles on it the Dealer doesn't even have to guarantee that it will pass New Jersey State inspection. If you didn't finance this vehicle, my advice is to trade it in and be done with it. BMWs are nice when they're new but when they get some years and miles on them, look out! They quickly can become a money pit!! Good luck to you!! Jim
