Probably a solenoid on the consaul/column activated when you hit the brake , Turn the wheel back and forth ? C.G. hears many problems with those fords

Yes, it's likely a defective brake-shift solenoid. You might have an emergency release. Look for a pin hole near the shifter and put a pin in it to release the shifter. Read the owners manual, available online.
