Obi for Ford. You can use a paper clip if you want. Check online on how to pull the code. Look under Codes for OBdi Mustang to find it easily. The electrical plugs are in the engine bay on the driver side at the firewall.

AUTO XRAY EZLINK OBDII CODE READER SCANNER I've used this brand and model since 2002. I bought it new ($400.00US) I immediately scanned five cars and it had paid for itself in under an hour. As of this writing, I saw one on eBay for under $100.00US.

TDolby has the correct answer. Follow his advice! A 1986 model is OBD I. Jim

Whoops! A quick trip out to the cars and I was able to shoot my own picture of my own scanner. I recommended the corrector scanner, but wrong connector :) Yes. Our 1986 Lincoln Mark VIIs are OBD I (as in one), not II (as in two). I stand corrected. https://www.JohnDancy.com/cars
