2009 q7 no alternator output. Hitachi 190amp

Asked by Detees42 Feb 24, 2019 at 05:53 PM about the 2009 Audi Q7 3.6 quattro Premium Plus AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2009 Audi Q7 with a 3.6 liter engine. The
alternator is a Hitachi , 190 amp, and it is water
cooled. Can I replace it with a different brand 180
amp alternator and then cut off the water hoses, or
will that cause problems? There's a huge price
difference. I thought I was getting  a deal on this
car...oh well. I also can't find the exact rebuild oot
on line. Can anyone help, please?

Audi probably cools the alternator due to high power demand which makes it run hot. You could do this but you may end up having a problem with the air cooled alternator. Couple the hoses together so that they can flow water.

Thank you for the response. What about the amperage difference....190 to 180? Can that hurt anything or cause slower charging, etc?
