Does the car need water

Asked by OnDreeah Aug 10, 2018 at 09:35 PM about the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So since it’s summer my dad is constantly telling me to
check my cars water so it doesn’t over heat. Do I’ve
looked a few time under the hood of my car and I don’t
believe I’ve seen a water tank? I see where the coolant
goes and where I should put water for the windshield
wipers but no water tank? I thought the coolant should
suffice? Please help I wouldn’t want to ruin my engine

There's a plastic tank for coolant attached by a small diameter hose to the radiator. It will have a fill line that says "hot" and "cold" on it. If engine is cold, then coolant should be at the "cold" line, and if engine has been running and is hot, then coolant will be at the "hot" line. That plastic tank is technically called a "degas" bottle, but often referred to as a coolant reservoir or overflow bottle. No modern car has a tank for pure water, and don't use pure water in place of the coolant. Not only does coolant prevent overheating and freezing, it also has rust inhibitors.
