2007 Sprinter Voltage Overcharging

Asked by BarefootBrad May 22, 2018 at 09:30 PM about the 2007 Dodge Sprinter Cargo 2500 144 WB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2007 Sprinter Diesel and have replaced the Alternator 4x's and JUST put another one in 3 days ago.  I finally put a voltage tester on the  battery terminal and when I am at idle the voltage goes from 14.1v to 19-20v and the battery light comes on, along with the seat belt alarm.  When I begin driving again, the volts go back to 14v.

Any ideas?

Thanks ahead of time.

It is not a Bosch. Rebuilt from O'Reilly. The alternator is working, it is just when I stop at a light or idle the volts go up to 20v.

Correct, the aftermarket alternators are back feeding, very common, you need to install a OEM alternator.

Is it coming back through the starter? I am only getting 7v from the pin on the top of the alternator (the wire from the starter).
