1991 Mazda Miata

Asked by Brandon Apr 13, 2017 at 12:31 AM about the 1991 Mazda MX-5 Miata Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1996 Mazda mx5 Miata , with the
special Corona engine in it . The body is
rotted out and I'm looking at buying a 1991
Mazda Miata that is in mint condition except
needing a new engine. I believe the 1991 has
a 1.6 and my 1996 is the 1.8. my question is
if I buy the 1991 can  I take the complete
motor and trans from my 1996 and drop it in
to the 1991 and will it be a plug and play?
Will the 1991 have the same motor mounts?
Anything that's different that i should know
of?

OBD2 and non OBD2... so there are a few issues. to answer your question. No. you cannot plug and play. the 5 speed trans is the same, no need to swap that over, motor mounts and arms are different. any 1.8 mount would work. The 96 has a few things different than all other years... well, the 96&97 as they are miata NA 1.8 OBD2 cars... There is a really good thread at the garage... oh, I mean miata.net on those forums, there is a special "garage" section that teaches you all sorts of things you may or may not care to know. Lastly, wtf is a "special Corona engine" ? if you are talking about the car, that is toyota. do you mean 323GTX or Familia ?

I have a 93 and did the 1.8 swap. Easy with flyn miata 1.8 conversion kit . As for motor can not be the vvt 1.8 motor . You have the right motor to fit may have a few hiccups. Like coil pack on back side motor throttle body and you will have to your 1.6 intake manifold to thd air box wont fit with 1.8 intake . If you have aftermarket radiator might have yo cut some plastic around fan . If you have facebook i can help ya out . Check out fly'n miata.com best way is to get there conversion kit im on fb luke ellis
