Will my 05' silverado be able to handle extra 3000lbs of weight?

Question type: General

So i bought a slide in truck camper to haul my budies and luggage down to Flordia. I added up all extra weight that going to be on the truck. Including people, luggage and other misc. stuff. It all came out to be just under 3000lbs. Will my truck be able to handle the load?
If not, what can I do so it will?

You could have rented a trailer and just pulled the stuff.

no, your truck is only rated for 1800 lbs. payload and the camper itself will probably max that out- get a trailer to pull the other stuff behind or add springs on both sides to make it like a 3/4 ton.

Richard, can you simply explain the adding of springs to boost the truck towing capacity? We just bought what we were told was a 2500 and is actually just a lifted 1500 V8. We have a 6,500 dry weight Sunnybrook trailer so we're not sure if we can haul it safely without burning up the brakes, engine, transmission, etc. Suggestions?

which v-8 is it, and what rearend? in your glovebox there will be codes in alphabetical order- GU6 is a 3.42 rear and GT4 is a 3.73 rear- engine size will be on a tag on the passenger side of the engine compartment near the air cleaner- a 3.42 rear with a 5.3 engine would be rated to tow 8500 lbs. with the factory trailer tow package (code is Z82 on your tag in the glovebox)- you would also need to push the tow haul button on the end of your shift lever so the yellow trailer light comes on- this will raise the shift points on the transmission and keep it out of overdrive. make sure that you have some good anti sway bars that go between the trailer and truck, especially since it has a lift so it doesn't get squirrelly in the wind- extra leaf springs only increase payload capacity, not tow rating- that is determined by the engine, transmission, and rearend. I hope this helps.
