cadillac engine casting number
i recently bought a bunch a tools from a private seller and in the lot is an
engine. The seller told me its a 472 and that it was pulled from a 1978 deville.
i know cadillac stop making the 472 in 1974 so i want to check the casting
number but i cant find anything online. Does anyone with a shop manual from
these years could help me. The casting number is 8139526

Is there a letter in front of the number 8? That looks like a 1968 Cadillac VIN. Cadillac stamped the VIN behind the carburetor on the intake manifold. The letter is the model, the 8 would be 1968, and the last six digits are the sequential unit number of the vehicle. Hope that helps! Jim
unfortunately the engine dosen't have the intake manifold. This number was taken from behind the engine
also this is assuming that it is a 472, or even a cadillac engine for that matter. i dont know engine blocks well enough to tell you what maker its from. i dont really care what car it came from i just want to know the displacement and the year. if it is a pre 1971 472 i might rebuild it as i have 3 cadillac from those years
Can you post pictures of the engine? I've had several 472s, a 500, a 429, and a 425. Jim
unfortunately I dont have anything that can take pictures but I did find a second casting number inside the block that goes 1486238 which means that its a 472 68-69 high compression engine! very happy with that. Thanks for your help!
You're welcome. Glad to help! If it has a deep oil pan, 6 quart capacity if I remember correctly, it's an Eldorado engine. Jim
