Probably the tachs servo failed. Just put an after market one in.

Perform an Instrument cluster self test. Cluster Self Test To activate the Cluster self Test for Bantam , Fiesta and Ikon : Switch the ignition to OFF and press the ODO trip button IN and hold, then switch the ignition ON and wait till the ODO display, displays TEST. The Gauges will go to full sweep and back. Press the ODO trip button again to go to the next test. Carry on through the tests. To exit the self test , switch off the ignition.
