The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas is essentially the same vehicle as before, but it gets key updates like different styling and more standard features. It also loses its six-cylinder engine option, but the remaining turbocharged four-cylinder engine gets more horsepower and torque.

The 2024 Atlas lineup includes SE, SE with Technology, SEL, and SEL Premium R-Line trim levels, plus a new-for-2024 Peak Edition treatment available on the SE with Technology and SEL trim levels. For this review, we tested an Atlas SEL Premium R-Line, representing the top of the range.

Verdict: While the downgrade in free charging is a bummer, the updated 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 is not. With the technology better sorted, improved comfort, an impressive sound system, and more power, performance, and range, VeeDub’s electric SUV need not make apologies.

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas received a stylish refresh, enhancing its sheet metal design that originated from the 2013 Volkswagen CrossBlue concept. The new lighting elements were the most noticeable updates, including light-up VW logos similar to those added to the ID.4 electric crossover. The front logo shone white, while the rear logo shined red, adding a modern touch. New front light bars connected to the daytime running lights and newly designed LED headlights, reminiscent of those from a Ford Expedition, provided the Atlas with a distinctly Americanized "face," sidestepping any European influences. At the back, the taillights blended with a full-width light bar, including the light-up logo.

All Atlas trim levels were updated with new wheel designs for 2024. The base SE model sported 18-inch alloy wheels, while higher trim levels like the SEL Premium R-Line came with 21-inch wheels and sportier styling elements. The newly introduced Atlas Peak Edition added an outdoorsy flavor with its black 18-inch wheels equipped with all-terrain tires, a different front fascia, front, and side silver body cladding, blacked-out exterior trim, and unique colors like Avocado Green and Pure Gray. The interior updates focused around the center, with a revised infotainment touchscreen now standing free of the dashboard and a smaller shifter toggle creating more storage space. The interior aimed for a more upscale feel with better grain fake wood trim and weaved plastic meant to simulate carbon fiber. In contrast, the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 kept drama out of its design, focusing on a conservative yet timeless look that aged well. Standard AWD versions had 20-inch wheels, while the S Plus trim boasted a 21-inch design. The ID.4 lineup comprised two models: ID.4 and ID.4 Pro, differentiated by their battery capacities of 62 kWh and 82 kWh, respectively. Leather upholstery and heated second-row seats became standard lower in the trim ladder on the SEL. The Atlas offered seating for seven with a standard second-row bench that could hold three child seats side by side. This bench could be replaced by captain's chairs at higher trim levels, reducing seating to six. The form factor remained competitive, with ample headroom and legroom across all rows. The third-row legroom was particularly noteworthy, besting rivals. Cargo space varied depending on seat configuration, with 20.6 cubic feet available with all seats in place, 55.5 cubic feet with the third row stowed, and a maximum of 96.6 cubic feet with both the second and third rows folded, exceeding most rivals except the Chevy Traverse.
