Subaru Forester vs Honda CR-V

In the past year, the 2023 Honda CR-V underwent a noticeable transformation, embracing a cleaner, more streamlined exterior with a blunt nose, long hood, and extended wheelbase. This sixth-generation model removed some of the characteristic flair of its predecessor, resulting in a more subdued but potentially timeless design. The CR-V EX and CR-V EX-L both sported 18-inch alloy wheels and dark-tinted rear privacy glass, maintaining uniformity in appearance across these trims. The interior featured upgrades such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather seats in the EX-L, complemented by a dashboard design borrowed from the latest Civic.

Conversely, the 2023 Subaru Forester retained its familiar, albeit plain, aesthetics that echoed its design lineage. With a boxy shape that conveyed utility, the Forester's robust appearance, especially in the Touring trim, was enhanced by 18-inch alloy wheels and satin chrome trim. Inside, even the most upscale Touring model stuck to traditional Subaru virtues with utilitarian design elements like Saddle Brown leather and exposed stitching. The interior finish favored functionality over form, ensuring that the Forester remained a practical choice consistent with its brand identity.

The CR-V's performance was anchored by a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine producing 190 horsepower, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Although the CVT proved efficient, it often drew criticism for its intrusive noise under hard acceleration. However, the CR-V excelled in ride quality and dynamic handling that made it a pleasure on various terrains, despite the audible complaints from the CVT.

The Forester employed a 2.5-liter engine, slightly less powerful at 182 horsepower, connected to a CVT that simulated traditional gear shifts. Notably equipped with off-road oriented technology like the X-Mode traction system, the Forester shone in adverse weather conditions and rough terrains, embodying Subaru's adventurous spirit. Despite some engine noise, the Forester's driveability remained solid, with commendable steering, braking, and suspension tuning that nearly disguised its utilitarian roots.

Technology in the CR-V ranged from standard digital displays to more advanced infotainment systems in higher trims, featuring wireless connectivity and updated safety features under the Honda Sensing suite. Yet, the overall tech offering felt just adequate, not pushing far beyond the average for its class.

On the other hand, the Forester’s tech appeared outdated, but it was functionally adequate, with upper trims featuring a reliable Harman Kardon audio system and simplified controls, including physical buttons that many users find preferable. Despite a less intuitive voice-recognition system, the overall user experience was straightforward and user-friendly.
