The 2024 Nissan Sentra brought refined aesthetics to the table. Its updated styling, starting with a wider grille seamlessly blending into the headlights—complete with new black interior bezel elements—gave it a modernized front fascia. Designed to evoke a sense of width, the vertical elements on the edges mimicked air vents, furthering the car’s "longer, lower, wider" philosophy. This updated look worked harmoniously with existing features like the black roof and pronounced rear-quarter panel shoulders. This combination avoided the extremes seen in cars like the Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla, maintaining more flair than the Honda Civic or Volkswagen Jetta.

Trim levels (S, SV, SR) remained the same from 2023. Base Sentra S came with 16-inch steel wheels, the Sentra SV featured newly designed 16-inch alloy wheels, and the Sentra SR showcased 18-inch wheels and distinct styling cues, including darkened chrome trim and a reshaped lower rear fascia. Notably, the SR trim offered a black roof option paired with vibrant colors like Monarch Orange Metallic or Electric Blue Metallic.

Inside the Sentra, the large round air vents, inspired by the Z sports car, and a dashboard design that framed the central touchscreen provided a sporty feel. The SR models included red-orange accent stitching on the standard cloth seats, while leather upholstery and a moonroof were available on the SV trim. A flat-bottom steering wheel and standard material quality added to its distinct character.

In contrast, the 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback’s look varied greatly based on angle, lighting, paint color, and wheels, akin to Gwen from Seinfeld's episode "The Strike." Sporting an eye-catching Boost Blue color and fetchingly designed 18-inch alloy wheels, the Sport Touring trim mostly appealed. Despite some reservations about the car’s stubby rear end, it was generally well-received.

The Civic Hatchback lineup included the base LX, Sport, EX-L, and Sport Touring models. The Sport Touring trim, equipped with 18-inch wheels, emphasized athleticism and high-quality materials, including elegant dashboard detailing with metal honeycomb mesh, knurled knobs, and high-resolution digital displays. Its sophisticated interior vividly reflected the car’s top-tier status.

The 2024 Nissan Sentra's performance was centered around a singular 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 149 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, paired exclusively with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The 2024 CVT was reengineered for improved fuel efficiency and smoother operation, though it introduced an engine start-stop system to further boost fuel economy.

Driving the Sentra was a pleasure despite its efficiency focus. The steering was precise with adequate feedback, allowing for intuitive driving without an overly fast steering ratio. The suspension provided a comfortable, stable ride, although the CVT’s unexpected surge of acceleration around 45 mph was noted, albeit our test vehicle was a pre-production model.

For the 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback, the available engines varied by trim. The base LX and Sport models featured a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 138 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm. The Sport trim offered an alternative six-speed manual gearbox, enhancing control, while its CVT included paddle shifters and a Sport mode.

The EX-L and Sport Touring trims came with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 180 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 177 pound-feet of torque between 1,700 rpm and 4,500 rpm. The Sport Touring offered a choice between a six-speed manual and a CVT, while the EX-L was CVT-only. Our Sport Touring test car, equipped with the CVT, handled well thanks to its well-matched turbo engine, resulting in a lively and enjoyable driving experience. However, the Civic Hatchback was notably loud on highways, and its fuel economy ratings ranged between 29 and 35 mpg in combined driving. Our test car averaged 30.2 mpg.

The 2024 Nissan Sentra offered ample front-seat space, thanks to Nissan’s Zero Gravity seats, providing excellent comfort. First-row headroom was comparable to its competitors but fell short on rear-seat legroom, positioning it at the lower end compared to other compact sedans. The vehicle provided a balance of front-seat legroom, although rear-seat legroom was less impressive.

Up front, the Sentra ensured practical storage with dual cupholders, phone slots, and a small change slot. Despite lacking all-wheel drive (AWD), it offered a comprehensive All-Weather Package for the SV and SR trims, including heated seats, steering wheel, exterior mirrors, remote engine start, and dual-zone climate control. Cargo capacity was 14.3 cubic feet, slightly surpassing the Mazda 3 and Hyundai Elantra but remaining below the Kia Forte and Honda Civic.

In contrast, the 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback’s form and function varied among trims. Upgrading to the EX-L and Sport Touring brought additional comforts such as dual-zone climate control, heated mirrors, heated seats, leather upholstery, and a power sunroof. The driver's seat offered eight-way power adjustment, enhancing long-distance comfort.

The rear seat in the Civic Hatchback was spacious enough for adults or children, outfitted with quick-charge USB ports in higher trims but lacking air vents. Cargo capacity in the hatchback configuration was a notable 24.5 cubic feet, nearly 10 cubic feet more than the Civic Sedan, adding significant versatility.

The 2024 Nissan Sentra featured basic tech in its S model, including a 7-inch touchscreen, 4.2-inch instrument cluster, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wired). Mid-range SV and SR trims upgraded to an 8-inch touchscreen and a 7-inch cluster display but still relied on analog gauges. The SV and SR trims offered additional connectivity like satellite radio, extra USB ports, and an optional eight-speaker Bose audio system with Wi-Fi for the SR. However, the Sentra's graphics appeared outdated compared to rivals.

The base LX and Sport trims included basic 7-inch digital instrumentation and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which were subpar compared to rivals. The Sport Touring trim, however, excelled with a 10.2-inch digital display and a 9-inch touchscreen, providing wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, HD Radio, navigation, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system. The voice-recognition system proved responsive and accurate in the Civic, enhancing user experience.

The 2024 Nissan Sentra had mixed safety ratings. The IIHS awarded it a "Good" rating in the original side-impact test but only "Acceptable" in the updated version. For front crash prevention, it achieved "Advanced" in daytime pedestrian detection but "Basic" at night, with "Poor" headlight ratings.
