2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

Once ridiculed and now increasing in popularity at an alarming rate, the SUV coupe, a vehicle type originated by BMW and copied by others to varying degrees of success, is taking over the gated suburban enclaves of America. From Acura (remember the ZDX?) to Volvo (C40 Recharge coming right up), automakers are trying the concept on for size, and it doesn’t always fit. However, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe, a low-roofed version of the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class SUV, is one recipe that works.

2023 BMW X1 Reviews Summary

The all-new, third-generation X1 is zippy and fun enough to be worthy of the distinction, but with new capability and plenty of cargo space, it’s bringing the utility, too.

Look and feel

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

2023 BMW X1

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe, with its Selenite Gray paint, 22-inch forged aluminum wheels, and polished brightwork, presented a balanced aesthetic that was neither offensive nor overly striking. The SUV's design, reminiscent of an athletic sneaker from a front three-quarter perspective, was complemented by a high-tech, luxurious interior featuring dual-screen instrumentation, Nappa premium leather, and ambient lighting. However, the lack of traditional controls posed a learning curve for new users.

In contrast, the 2023 BMW X1 evolved from its predecessor with a more robust and refined look. The larger, squarer kidney grille and flush door handles gave it a modern edge, while the new color palette, including dynamic options like Blue Bay Lagoon and Utah Orange, added vibrancy. The interior, dominated by the BMW Curved Display and SensaTec 2.0 seat coverings, offered a premium feel without being overly luxurious. The M Sport Package added sportier elements, enhancing the overall driving experience.

Performance

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2023 BMW X1

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe was powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, producing 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. The EQ Boost 48-volt mild-hybrid system provided additional power and improved fuel efficiency, with an EPA rating of 19 mpg combined. The SpeedShift nine-speed automatic transmission and AMG Performance 4Matic+ AWD system ensured robust acceleration and handling. The AMG Dynamic Select system offered multiple driving modes, and the AMG Active Ride Control suspension provided a balance between comfort and performance. However, the SUV's size and weight were noticeable on challenging roads, and the performance exhaust system was loud in Sport+ mode.

The 2023 BMW X1 featured a 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinder engine with a new dual injection system, delivering 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This power boost allowed the X1 to achieve a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds and a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) replaced the previous eight-speed automatic, offering a more engaged driving experience. The Adaptive M Suspension and damping systems minimized body roll, though the ride was slightly stiff. The X1's EPA fuel economy was rated at 25 mpg city, 34 highway, and 28 combined.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe offered seating for up to five, though it was more comfortable for four adults. The front seats were highly adjustable, heated, ventilated, and massaging, providing excellent comfort and support. The rear seats offered ample legroom, and the cargo space was generous at 27.5 cubic feet, expanding to 63.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Additional comfort features included a four-zone climate control system and an Air Balance in-cabin fragrance system.

The 2023 BMW X1, with its larger dimensions, provided impressive headroom (42.1 inches front, 39.3 inches rear) and legroom (40.4 inches front, 37 inches rear). The cargo space was also notable, with 25.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 57.2 cubic feet with them folded. Heated seats were an optional feature, and the wireless charging pad was part of the Premium Package. The slim floating center armrest added a sophisticated touch, though it wasn't particularly roomy.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe came standard with the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, featuring dual 12.3-inch screens, navigation, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Burmester surround-sound audio system. The system was user-friendly, with natural voice recognition technology and multiple interaction methods. Optional features included an MBUX Interior Assistant with gesture recognition and an augmented video feature for navigation.

The 2023 BMW X1 introduced the BMW Curved Display with iDrive 8, integrating a 10.7-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch driver information display. The system was responsive and easy to operate, with effective voice commands and smooth touchscreen functionality. Standard features included BMW maps, Bluetooth interface, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The Premium Package added a head-up display and augmented reality navigation. The optional 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system provided excellent audio quality.

2023 BMW X1

7/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe was equipped with numerous safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The Driver Assistance Package added 15 additional systems, including Traffic Jam Assist and Active Lane Change Assist. The SUV's safety systems were refined and accurate, though the route-based speed adaptation function could be irritating. Crash-test results for the GLE Coupe were unavailable, but the standard GLE received top safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA.

The 2023 BMW X1 came standard with active blind-spot detection, front-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and brake intervention. The Active Driving Assistant Professional suite included speed limit assist, traffic-jam assistant, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control with stop & go function. The Premium Package added a 360-degree camera system, and Active Park Distance Control and Back-Up Assistant were available options. The updated Parking Assistant Plus used the curb and other vehicles as reference points for parking assistance.
