2019 Kia Forte Reviews Summary

Highways are increasingly full of crossovers and small SUVs, but not too long ago sedans ruled the road. The simple three-box design made for a vehicle that was, and still is, an effective daily driver. It has enough trunk space for several bags and room for 4 (or even 5) passengers. They are often more fuel-efficient than their heavier SUV counterparts and almost always less expensive.

Maybe this explains why Kia’s best-selling vehicle last year wasn’t any of its SUVs or crossovers. It was the Forte, which has been completely redesigned for 2019.

Even when limited to small cars, the Forte's competition is quite stiff. But the Honda Civic has been generally heralded as the gold standard. The Civic is just a bit larger and a bit more upscale than other cars in its segment, but its higher price tag reflects that status.

The Forte previously operated only in the “value” end of this spectrum, with a dash of sporty styling thrown in (but generally lacking the performance to back it up). The new Forte is certainly sportier and more upscale, yet it still keeps value as one of its core principles. After a week driving it, we can say it is absolutely one of the standout small cars of this year, but does it have the goods to outgun the Civic?

2020 Honda Accord Reviews Summary

Mary Walton’s “Car: A Drama of the American Workplace” details the development of the 1996 Ford Taurus from sketch to series production. The car was a legendary flop, a collage of compromise. Walton’s book explains why, and in juicy detail.

Bringing a new or redesigned vehicle to market isn’t easy, even if Honda makes it look that way. The 2020 Honda Accord Touring is the family sedan perfected, from its rakish good looks and delightful driving dynamics to its huge back seat and giant trunk. The 2020 Honda Accord also boasts plenty of tech, including Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and adaptive cruise control.

Sure, you can quibble with a few things related to the 2020 Accord. After all, no car is perfect. But the Honda Accord Touring sure does come close in so many of the ways that matter most, from usability to mpg.

Look and feel
2019 Kia Forte
9/10
2020 Honda Accord
9/10
CarGurus experts have rated both the 2019 Kia Forte and the 2020 Honda Accord highly for their look and feel, each receiving a 9 out of 10. The 2019 Kia Forte presents a more mature design over its predecessors, drawing inspiration from the sporty Kia Stinger. This all-new generation maintains a jellybean-like shape with a plucky, yet menacing front-end. It integrates additional small rear quarter windows and features a high-tech, contemporary cabin reminiscent of the Audi A3's layout. The Forte is offered in FE, LXS, S, and EX trims, each progressively adding more features, with the EX trim offering a luxurious package that includes amenities such as a Harman Kardon premium stereo and wireless phone charging. The 2020 Honda Accord, celebrated for being one of the most stylish in its lineage, impresses with its fastback appearance and upscale look. Available in LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Touring trims, the Accord also offers a hybrid version. The interior, especially in the Touring trim with its Radiant Red paint and Ivory interior, exudes luxury with high-quality materials and a great look and feel. The Accord stands out for its visual presence on the road, particularly with the 19-inch wheels offered in the Sport and Touring trims.
Performance
2019 Kia Forte
7/10
2020 Honda Accord
8/10
Performance ratings from CarGurus show the 2019 Kia Forte with a 7 out of 10 and the 2020 Honda Accord with an 8 out of 10. The Kia Forte features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine across all trims, providing adequate power for its class and impressive fuel economy, especially with the CVT option. Its handling is confident, and the car is equipped with a Drive Mode Selector to tailor the driving experience to the driver's preference. The Honda Accord offers more diverse powertrain options, including a standard turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, and a hybrid option. The 2.0-liter engine delivers exhilarating performance, especially in Sport mode, though its powerful front-wheel-drive layout sometimes struggles with traction. The Accord also boasts adaptive dampers for a controlled and enjoyable driving experience, solidifying its position as both a fun-to-drive and efficient family sedan.
Form and function
2019 Kia Forte
8/10
2020 Honda Accord
9/10
The 2019 Kia Forte and the 2020 Honda Accord both excel in providing spacious and functional interiors, alongside notable cargo capacities that cater to the needs of families and individuals alike. The Forte has evolved significantly in size, translating to a more comfortable and roomier interior. Despite its compact sedan classification, the 2019 Kia Forte boasts an impressive 15.3 cubic feet of trunk space. This expansion in size not only enhances passenger comfort but also ensures that the Forte can accommodate a considerable amount of luggage, making it a practical choice for travelers and commuters. The vehicle's smart trunk system enhances convenience, allowing for hands-free opening when your hands are full. On the other hand, the 2020 Honda Accord positions itself closer to the full-size sedan segment, especially in terms of interior spaciousness and cargo capacity. With a trunk room measuring an ample 16.7 cubic feet, the Accord surpasses many competitors, providing enough space to store full-size suitcases on their sides. This capacity makes the Accord an ideal companion for long family road trips, offering ample space for luggage and essentials. Despite the Accord's generous trunk space, it's noted that Honda does not provide a handle or grip to facilitate closing the trunk lid, a minor inconvenience in an otherwise well-designed vehicle.
Technology
2019 Kia Forte
9/10
2020 Honda Accord
9/10
Technology ratings for both vehicles are high, with the 2019 Kia Forte and the 2020 Honda Accord each receiving a 9 out of 10. The Forte's 8-inch UVO touchscreen is user-friendly, offering vivid graphics and intuitive controls. It also features Kia’s UVO e-services for enhanced roadside assistance and vehicle diagnostics. The Honda Accord's 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system stands out for its ease of use, featuring physical volume and tuning knobs, clear graphics, and comprehensive connectivity options, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both vehicles excel in integrating technology for convenience and entertainment, with a slight edge for the Accord due to its additional features like HondaLink and wireless charging in higher trims.

2020 Honda Accord

Safety is a strong suit for both models, with the 2019 Kia Forte scoring a 9 out of 10 and the 2020 Honda Accord an 8 out of 10. The Forte offers a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including forward-collision avoidance and lane-keeping assist, setting a high standard for small cars. Optional features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available for added security. The Honda Accord is recognized for its safety by the IIHS and NHTSA, featuring the Honda Sensing suite of advanced driving assistance systems as standard across all trims. However, some of Honda Sensing's features, such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning, could benefit from refinement to reduce false alerts and improve smoothness in operation.
