Who Is The Hyundai Ioniq 5 Best For?

The Ioniq 5 is ideal for anyone considering their first EV — or their next one. It manages to feel familiar the moment you sit down in it, and that's precisely the point. Its spacious, flat-floored cabin is bigger than you might think, and the car rides on a dedicated EV platform that makes the most of every inch, delivering rear-seat legroom that embarrasses midsize SUVs.
Buyers can choose between rear- and all-wheel drive, standard- and long-range batteries, and a regenerative braking system that lets you dial in exactly as much one-pedal driving as you're comfortable with — or none at all, so it drives just like the gas car you're coming from.
Other highlights of the interior include a thoughtful mix of physical buttons and screens, and an easy-to-use infotainment system.
Access to the Tesla Supercharger network via NACS compatibility has eliminated one of the last remaining hurdles for newcomers, and fast-charging from 10 to 80 percent takes roughly 18 minutes under ideal conditions.
Why Did The Hyundai Ioniq 5 Win The CarGurus Confidence Award For Best EV Experience?
This one wasn't close. Out of 24 eligible EVs, the Ioniq 5 earned the highest point total of any winner in any category — and it did so with three of our four voters placing it first on their ballots.
It dominated in the two areas we weighted most heavily, Cost-Effectiveness and Tech Level, delivering a ground-up EV with cutting-edge charging capability and a user-friendly ownership experience at a price that undercuts much of the competition.
Where other EVs ask buyers to adapt their habits, the Ioniq 5 meets them where they are.
What Did The CarGurus Team Say About The Hyundai Ioniq 5?

"The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is about as user-friendly an EV as you can get, especially now that it can charge on the Supercharger network. You get the benefits of ground-up EV design, with a spacious cabin in a vehicle that's not too big for public charging spaces. And you can progress your usage of features like regenerative braking as you become a more advanced EV owner yourself — set it to drive just like a gas car, go full one-pedal drive, or land somewhere in between." — Natalie Harrington, Lead Staff Writer, CarGurus

Honorable Mentions
Ford Mustang Mach-E (Runner-Up):

Ford's sporty electric crossover pairs head-turning Mustang styling with genuine crossover practicality — including a drainable frunk and up to 59.7 cubic feet of cargo space. Fast-charging speeds have improved significantly, and access to both the Ford and Tesla Supercharger networks gives newcomers the kind of charging flexibility that makes range anxiety a non-issue.
Nissan LEAF (Runner-Up):

The newly redesigned LEAF earned a perfect 10 for Cost-Effectiveness, starting under $30,000 before incentives. It's a completely different vehicle from its predecessor — sharper styling, a modern NACS charging port, and up to 214 horsepower — while keeping the approachable, no-nonsense character that made the original LEAF one of the first EVs to crack the mainstream.
How Did We Choose The Best EV Experience? (Methodology)
The CarGurus Confidence Awards — Best EV Experience 2026 was determined through a multi-step, data-driven process designed to balance editorial expertise with real-world market conditions:
Eligibility filtering: To qualify, an EV needed at least 1,000 units of national dealer inventory and an average listing price no more than 15% above the manufacturer's suggested retail price. No hard price cap was applied to this category; instead, the Cost-Effectiveness score (weighted at 25%, the highest tier) naturally rewarded more affordable options in the scoring. This process yielded 24 eligible EVs.
Weighted scoring: Each eligible EV was scored by our editorial team across six dimensions: Look & Feel, Performance, Form & Function, Tech Level, Safety, and Cost-Effectiveness. For this category, we applied the following weights: Cost-Effectiveness (25%), Tech Level (25%), Form & Function (20%), Performance (15%), Look & Feel (10%), and Safety (5%). Cost-Effectiveness and Tech Level were weighted highest because the transition to electric ownership hinges on affordability, charging ease, range confidence, and intuitive software. Safety was weighted lowest because EVs broadly meet high safety standards due to their structural advantages.
Ranked ballot vote: Our editorial panel each independently ranked their top five EVs. Points were assigned on a 5-4-3-2-1 scale (#1 pick = 5 points, #5 pick = 1 point) and summed across all voters. The highest point total determined the winner, with tiebreakers resolved by: (1) most first-place votes, (2) higher AI Weighted Score, and (3) higher national inventory.
