Updates to the interior and a new standard tire pressure monitor amount to the only changes for the 2008 GMC Savana Cargo. This utility van has only one row of seats for two passengers, and its cargo bay can hold either 267 or 317 cubic feet depending on whether you get the 135-inch or extended 155-inch wheelbase version. The extended version is available only with the 2500 and 3500 trims. Rear barn doors open 180 degrees for easier loading capability.
New for 2008 are some revisions to the instrument panel, dials and switches, steering wheel, and a more extensive driver information computer, which earns a lot of praise from owners. The optional cloth seats are also upgraded. The 2008 Savana Cargo comes in three different weight classes -- 1500, 2500, and 3500. The rear-wheel drive van has an all-wheel drive option for the 1500 trim. All trims come minimally equipped, since their focus is mainly on work and hauling power. Air conditioning, a security system, radio, and intermittent wipers can be supplemented with power features, cruise control, and a CD player. In frontal impact tests, the 2008 Savana Cargo earns five stars, thanks to standard ABS brakes, dual front airbags, and Stabilitrak.
Towing power is key for owners, and the Savana can haul anywhere from 6,000 to 10,000 pounds depending on the weight class. 1500s start with a 4.3-liter, 195-hp V6, while the 2500 and 3500 come standard with a 4.8-liter, 279-hp V8. Other V8 choices include a 6.0-liter, 323-hp and a 6.6-liter, 250-hp turbodiesel. A 5.3-liter, 301-hp V8 comes with the AWD 1500 only. All engines are matched to a 4-speed automatic with overdrive. A 60/40 swing-out passenger door accesses the cargo bay from the side, and a similar driver's side door or a sliding door can be added. Owners who look to the 2008 Savana Cargo for utilitarian functionality rate the 6.0 V8 high for its power and heft, and complain only about the 12/16 mpg.
