The Land Rover LR3 replaced the Discovery in the U.S. market for the 2005 model year. It is the third generation of the Discovery series, which was first introduced in America as 1994 model. Changes for 2007 include the addition of leather seating, a premium Harmon Kardon audio system, and a power sunroof to its list of standard features. an in-dash clock is also new. The LR3 is available in two trims; the entry level SE and the more upscale HSE. Along with the aforementioned items, the SE comes equipped with power front seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, full power accessories and dual zone automatic climate control. The V8-powered SE also adds a standard third row of seating and rear parking sensors. The HSE's upgrades include larger 19-inch wheels, a navigation system with Bluetooth, memory seats, xenon headlamps, and an upgraded Harmon Kardon sound system. There are two engines available with the LR3. The SE can be powered by either a 4.0 liter V-6 or a 4.4 liter V-8. The V-6 delivers 210 horsepower while the V-8 provides 300. A six speed automatic transmission is mated to both engines. The LR3 rides atop a fully independent system, enhanced further by Land Rover's five-setting adjustable 4WD. It should go without saying, but the LR3 is prepared for all types of travel with this innovative 4WD system.

The vehicle is decent value when equipped with the V8 engine for reliability. It's a pretty cool vehicle with some great features such as the air suspension, heated front & rear seats, sunroof plus addition non-opening sunroof and glass panel for the 2nd and 3rd row seating. All seating is fold flat in to the floor so that gives a great big area for transporting or creating cargo space (safe flat areas for dogs instead of on seats) and the seating configuration is flexible. It is missing some creature comforts and the infotainment/navigation system is seriously outdated, and updating these items will cost a fair chunk of change of they are important to you. For example: this model does not come with remote start even in its highest trim level. This is a feature that is extremely important to me living in Calgary to preheat the cab in winter and precool in summer. That's a $500 - $1,000 after market upgrade. Phone connectivity, GPS Nav, music/entertainment, and vehicle health systems (tire monitoring, 4wd status, suspension status, engine/transmission/oil temps, etc) are other features that are important to me and require significant upgrades to be able to function as OEM with the existing equipment - this requires a digital dash and center dash console upgrade which costs approx. $2k to $2.5k in equipment without installation.plan another $1,300+ for installation of you aren't handy. As I would be doing the installation myself for all the above listed equipment, it would cost approx. $3k which is about half the price of purchasing a good used LR3. I'm personally ok with that as this would be a vehicle I keep around for a significant amount of time. Owners should be mindful of planning for significant maintenance costs to keep this vehicle on the road as certain systems, such as the existing air suspension, will need to be replaced eventually. If you are handy with wrenches, want a reliable engine, a cool looking and fun vehicle that floats like the 70's/80's comfy boats on the road, and are ok without the infotainment technology of today's vehicles, then this will be a blast. It also makes for a super comfy 4x4 offroader/mud crawler or a great vehicle for getting to off the beaten path camp sites if that's your jam.
January 7, 2026full 7 seater, great looks, lots of extras available. needs chipping, great tow vehicle, make sure you get an auto. Electronic park brake is the weak point. This is the best 4x4 money can buy bar none, forget the rest. Oh and make sure you buy a diesel.

October 9, 2020Only things I don't like about this truck are poor fuel mileage and cost of repair/maintenance. Other than that, the Jag engine is amazing, the space is cavernous and the piece of mind you have that it can be driven in any climate is reassuring.
March 1, 2012This is my third Land Rover in the Discovery line, so I obviously like the vehicle. I like the feel and look of the car. It feels a bit ponderous, but it has a respectable turning radius and great power compared to the Discovery II. The interior is roomy and the sound system is exceptional.
April 28, 2013The Discovery 3 / LR3 has amazing off-road capabilities without sacrificing on-road ride and handling. The air suspension provides unrivalled ground clearance and while on high ride mode this beast managed to wade anything I threw at during it last summer's UK flooding. The interior and exterior design successfully combine toughness with luxury. The 7 seat folding and stowing possible combations makes this the most adaptable SUV interior I've seen.
March 15, 2008I have an impossible 22.4 MPG- fueleconomy.gov quote LR3 12MPG(city) & 17MPG(motorway) In addition I have Front brush gards Running Boards and rear brush gards. I often drive to my Moutain place(ski resort) LR3 is more than capable when I take the short cuts. With Disco's still demanding up to 16,000 for the last model in 04 the LR3 is worth every penny. Plus 9,700LBS towing
May 18, 2010This is a "one car only" for any family small or big (7 seat version), farmer, extreme sports practice, holidays and anyone who needs to tow a boat, horse or a building... You can go anywhere in this vehicle (take the step boards off first though), it is comfortable and very pleasant to drive. Performance... 4x4's are not meant to drive like Cayennes or AMG's.. it's a mistake.. buy yourself an Audi RS6 estate car if you need space and performance. This is a purpose built vehicle, so buy it and use it for a purpose. This is the work horse, that you are probably not yourself, if you buy (and can afford) this vehicle. So it will make up for your own deficiencies.. I know... it does for me..
February 12, 2009I love my LR3. It has many features and options that make the ride ever so enjoyable. Navigation screen has been a huge help to my wife. All the room is great for hauling boys around for soccer. The 6 pack cooler is great to keep the pints cold as well!
July 14, 2008Lots of room, goes everywhere and can definitely put all of my baby's things inside. Great vehicle for a family getaway. Unless you are going for a long vacation, plenty of room for all the luggage. Very, very comfortable. Thumbs up!!!
