When MAZDASPEED, Mazda's in-house motorsports and specialty-car tuning division, set out to create a high-performance Miata, it focused on five areas -- the Miata's performance, handling, appearance, driver-vehicle connectivity, and value. As far as performance was concerned, the MAZDASPEED MX-5 Miata received a 25 percent power boost over the standard Miata, thanks to a turbocharged and intercooled 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that pumped out 178 horsepower. It was linked to a six-speed manual transmission, with refined shift points and a strengthened clutch.
Helping to improve the Miata's handling were a lower ride height, beefed-up springs and dampers, a modified double-wishbone suspension, and rack-and-pinion steering.
Standard features included black cloth-trimmed upholstery, power windows, power door locks, dual second-generation airbags, a black vinyl convertible top, a glass rear window, anti-lock braking system, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a Bose six-speaker audio system with CD. A Grand Touring package added black leather bucket seats and a black cloth soft top, among other features.
Drivers noted that Mazda succeeded in such areas as the value and performance factors, but some had quibbles with the vehicle, including its air conditioning, gas mileage, and seats, which some drivers felt were less then comfortable, especially over the long haul.

these mazdaspeeds are an underappreciated treasure, only made for 2 years, makes my previous miata look tired. A gray wolf in Miata clothing.Takes Miata to a new level. If you find a good used one, it will be a treasureSep 28, 2014

Overall the car is a great buy for the money. The vehicle is light weight and has a good solid powerband throughout. If you have some spare money, putting FM parts on it is a great way to go to get good reliable aftermarket parts. Otherwise its still easy to modify if you go custom. Either way, if you just are looking to modify or just want something peppy to go around town, this is a great car for any roadster enthusiast.Apr 16, 2013

I've owned this car since August 2008 I believe I'm only the second owner. It's been a fun, sporty car that gets good mileage around 28-32mpg and low maintenance costs. I'm just under 5' 10" so I fit well inside the cockpit. I've enjoyed cruising around with the top down, especially on warm evenings. If you are a UT fan you'll enjoy the Lava orange mica color as it reminds many of the burnt orange. If you aren't a UT fan you'll still likely find this a gorgeous colored car. Apr 25, 2012

This was my Dads car the first year. My first AutoX in it I was in the top 10 overall, beating 93 cars as well as their professional drivers. I put a Standalone EMS (Hydra), turned up the boost to 11psi, downpipe, no muffler, intake, and a rollbar. This car was fast as hell and was short geared for 1/8th miles and touge. I went to the dragon twice in it and ripped it up both times. I blew the engine on the dragon and it was down for 3 months. I put a new engine in and tuned it to 208.9RWHP at 11psi and an AFR of 11.3. My average horsepower was just under 200 in the powerband, which means i only lost 9 horsepower in shifts. Included Flat-shifting and launch control. About 4.5 for my 0-60 and an approximate 1.2 on the skid pad.
I moved to NYC and i still own the car but it will be sold soon.Aug 13, 2008

The Mazdaspeed Miata is a near-perfect drivers car packaged in a tight 2500lb roadster package. 52/48% weight distribution, 33% stiffer spring rates and Long travel shocks over the sport package, 178bhp from the factory, short throw close ratio 6-speed gear box behind a 4.10 TORSEN diff, all make the car pure mechanical poetry. The shifter is amazing, although plagued with bushing problems that can easily be addressed cheap, and is expected every 50-70kmi. The car responds amazingly well to simple upgrades, and many (myself included) are running 225+ whp with under $1000 work. The car is light on its feet even at speeds >75mph. Interior options are minimal, with leather and cloth top as the only option (GT). Taller people (5'11" +) will want the cloth over leather due to the leather seats extra bolstering. Weak points of the car are its 4.10 Diff, toping you out too soon, and the restrictions on height of the driver without changing seats or fabrication. Great car for the track minded individual or for the occasional spirited daily driver. In stock trim 0-60 in 6.2s with about a 14.8 1/4. Jul 05, 2008

I have lots of goodies added to my MazdaSpeed Miata 2005 with a wide body kit from an rx7 but fitted to the car. I have mods such as tuning roll bar blow off valve exhaust racing cooling system and custom piping. On Cargurus does Mods affect the pricing? If so how much would someone recommend to sell it for. I am asking 9500 with current transmission (3rd gear isnt in good condition but the trans is great) or 10000 for a new one. Any price recommendations
