2003 Lexus GX Preview summaryImage

In 2003 Lexus introduced their third luxury SUV offering: the GX 470. This new model was based on the rugged Toyota 4Runner, providing Lexus a midsize option between the car-like RX and Land Cruiser-based LX 470. Although the GX was not billed as the flagship Lexus SUV, it came equipped with additional off road features that were absent from the LX. The GX 470 was fitted with the latest off-road management system and adjustable suspension. The GX 470 utilized the sam power plant as the larger LX. The 4.7 liter V-8 made 235 horsepower and provided 320 pound-feet of torque. Since this 4Runner-based SUV was over 500 pounds lighter than the LX, this power was quite sufficient. Off the line, the GX reached 60 mph in just under eight seconds. The lighter weight aided in braking as well: the GX returned to a stop from 60 mph in just 130.8 ft. The GX 470 didn't have much over the LX with regard to fuel economy, with gas mileage observed at 15/18 mpg. This new sport utility seemed to be what many former RX and LX drivers had been waiting for. While it was less nimble than the RX and slightly less spacious and luxurious than the LX, the GX was the most loyal to its SUV classification. It is built upon the traditional body-on-frame truck design, and features full time 4WD. Other features like a two-speed transfer case and a hill descent feature allow drivers to confidently abandon the comfort of paved surfaces.

Good reliable features. Yes for the price it’s a good value since it’s a Toyota. It’s missing a backup camera and Bluetooth. I’d compare it to the 4Runner. Dec 02, 2024

This car is incredible! Super smooth ride, everyone who has driven it tells me they can't believe how beautifully it drives. I think the other reviewer might want to get their car's alignment, etc. checked out. I was rear ended in my car while I was stopped. The person who hit me was going 50 mph and didn't even brake before impact. I can't believe how well my car handled the impact. Surprisingly the car had little damage. The auto body shop commented on how well these cars do in accidents. It is a very solid car. While researching SUV's in 2003, this vehicle was one of the highest (if not the highest) rated for safety. I feel extremely safe driving it. LOVE the 8 seats (sadly the new 2010 GX460 has only 7) we have had many occasion to use all 8 seats too! It costs between $40.00 - $50.00 to fill up, but has a 20 gallon tank. It isn't the greatest in gas mileage, however, I understand that you can't have a car that size and quality without paying more for mileage. Superbly reliable, amazing quality, very comfortable. I have always followed the recommended maintenance plans and have never had any problems. People who drive my car offer to buy it off of me all of the time. We pull our horses (2) in a steel trailer, and our boat without feeling any strain. We live in Michigan and it is FANTASTIC in our hilly/snowy area. LOVE IT! I plan on buying the same model, if I can get over losing the 8th seat! The dealership told me that they dropped the 8th seat as the new 3rd row is automatic and they needed room for the motor. Argh! I may just buy a 2009 instead just to get the 8th seat. I find the inside appearance to be really classy and beautiful. The engineers thought of everything - for 2003 they were way ahead of the game. I do like the side swing rear door vs. a pull down door. It has never been a problem and I do parallel park. If you are remotely interested, go test drive this car and you'll see just what I mean. This car is a dream to drive, 12 straight hours of driving and it was a dream!Aug 13, 2010
