Write a reviewThe biggest change for the 2002 BMW X5 was the addition of the 4.6is model. As if the 4.4i wasn't fast enough, BMW introduced the 4.6is as the new standard bearer of the lineup, complete with a 347-horsepower, V8 engine.
At the time of its release, reviewers noted that it "may be the best handling SUV on the road," while conceding that a $40,000+ luxury automobile probably isn't the best option for off-road adventures (muddy trails, however, are "easily negotiable"). All 2002 models were upgraded with an in-dash CD player as standard equipment, optional automatic headlight control, and more options for seat adjustments. Adjustable ride height was a new option on the 3.0i and 4.4i models (not available on 4.6is).

Love the looks and muscular stance, comfortable for short or long journey for 5 + luggage. Good gas mileage on the expressway but not bad for city as well. Fast and reliable beast.

Such a high-end vehicle with shoddy work in leather trim and electronics! Maintenance and dependability are not to words that go together for and X-5. I love bimmer but if I did it all over I would have bought the Acura SUV instead of BMW and stick with buying sedans built and manufactured in Germany and not South Carolina. No not of S.C because I live there but BMW could have done better. I have a93 325is thats still running strong with almost 200,000 miles on it and never had the problems I've gotten with the X-5 maybe the bugs and kinks have been ironed out with newer models!Mar 16, 2015

The repair bills added up over the nine years I owned it. It is still a solid car with no rust but too many things need replacing: tranny slips bad, driver-side rear door does not open, fan stays on even with the car off and keys in my pocket, wet floor on passenger side probably from a leaky windshield.

Performance, the BMW X5 has awesome acceleration, braking, handling.
Build Quality, German engineering at its best.
Appearance, both interior and exterior styling are super sexy.
Cost of Ownership, gas mileage, maintenance...it has a 20 gallon gastank, so cost
around $60 USD or so to fill up, but you are going to get at least 400 mile on a full
tank, so it actually last the week

It's a lifted station wagon that handles like a car, and costs roughly a kidney a year to maintain. It is also loud enough and quick enough to get you in trouble in about 10 seconds. The design is good enough where people think it's new, even though it's 8 years old. Aug 03, 2010

Performance and handling are amazing, you can drive extremely high speeds with confidence and great control.
On the down side, regular maintenance and check ups are required every few thousand miles
Appearance is good, both inside and outside.

It's my second home! I have a real relationship with this car. I know that sounds funny, but it is....It's the perfect familycar, and you can fit a lot in it. Ikea runs are no problem at all!
Plus I have never had any complaints about BMW service, which is just super. The X5 is my 4th BMW, I started with a 316 in 1988, going through the newer model 318td, then the 525tds, but the X5 is farout the best car I've ever driven. I live in Portugal and I know of some other big (german) makes that have real bad service, that is also one of the points why I would stick with BMW, alongside the fact that I never had any bad experience and I like the way it handles. i hear the X6 is a marvelous car..that is on my next car wish list...Jan 18, 2009

It's the 3.0 Diesel and it's great in torque, performance and fuel economical...handling is great too and still looks good after all these year having owned it from new till today. no regrets and it's a definite must have is you are ever shopping for a SUV that built tough, looks that still hold and keep and performance with the fuel economy...diesel's way to go.Jan 14, 2009

Performance is good for 3.0i, but definitely struggles when trying to accelerate on hills. Build quality is good. Some interior pieces on common areas such as door handles and steering wheel flake/chip, but overall had held up well. Gas mileage with city and commute driving has been @18mpg. LOVE this car - hate the rising gas prices
This car is so sexy, fast, and fun; I can't find another vehicle I'd want. Other than normal BMW quirks, this car has been a dream. Maintenance is reasonable (it is still a luxury car). I love coming home to this car every time I'm away, and my passengers love it too... :)Jul 23, 2008

This car was in near-perfect condition when I purchased it used from Carmax. It is beautiful inside and out. The gas mileage is reasonable considering the weight of the car. I can get 19/24 on a regular basis, even on regular unleaded (sorry, it's way to expensive for premium right now).Jul 08, 2008

Having black interior in the desert is a big mistake (even though the black wood and quailty of leather is very upscale). Installing high quality DLS speakers both in the front and the rear along with the Alumapro 10 inch subwoofer makes listening to the ipod, XM, or cd's on the Pioneer D3 a treat. After a few years of abuse, the performance have dipped from the 4.6 V8, although still has enough power across the broadband for needed acceleration. Since the 4.6is is a special edition model, the blue paint is highly specific. A wonderful look along with the stock 20 inch rims.May 23, 2008

I have a 2002 x5, changed the master cylinder but now the car wont start. Replaced the battery, all the lights come on, fan blower, radio but the starter doesnt turn over. When I use a jump starter power pack connected to the jump posts under the front hood the car starts right up. I cant figure this out, I need help?

My 02' BMW X5 Will Not Start --Please HELP!--
My BMW X5 Cranks, but does not start. Here is a list of troubleshooting I've done so far; 1. Checked all Fuses and relays. (Front, Glove and Rear fuse boxes) 2. Checked Fuel Pump, working fine. Also tried priming the fuel pump and the car fired up for a few seconds and then shut down. Which leads me to believe that the fuel pump is somehow not getting power. 3. Checked Crankshaft Position Sensor, working fine. 4. Camshaft Position Sensor checked, working fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How can I unlock my 02 BMW X5 door when batter is disconnected
Hi my 02 BMW X5 3.0i runs great, yesterday when I turned it on, I found the heater control panel stops working, and there is no power. even when I turned off my engine, the climate fan still running, I can not stop it, so I opened the trunk and manually disconnected battery and stopped the climate fan's running. However, when I tried to use my key to open the door today because battery is disconnected, and I cannot open the door now, the key does not work. Thank you if I can have answers from the experts here.

No crank no start what could be the problem?
I installed a radio in my 2002 bmw x5. The battery died overnight. It ran for 2 days after i got a jumpstart. Then it suddenly died. Smoke came from under the hood and through the vents. I let it sit and tried to start it the next day no start no crank and the battery went dead again what can be the problem?
