A compact car isn't necessarily meant to be fun. Tell that to Subaru who introduced a rally-inspired model to its Subaru Impreza lineup this year. Already available in an L sedan and coupe and Outback Sport, featuring a 2.2-liter, 142-hp H4 engine, the 2000 Impreza screams onto the road with a new RS coupe and sedan, powered by a 2.5-liter, 165-hp H4. Both L and RS come with choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto tran, but the new RS models have a sports suspension, a limited slip differential, ground effects, a rear spoiler, and a large hood scoop. Taking cues from Subaru's World Rally Championship winning cars, the 2003 Impreza RS sedan and coupe look and act the part of a street racer.
There were few changes to the rest of the lineup. The 2000 Impreza remains the only car in its class featuring full-time AWD, providing surefooted performance in any road or weather condition. The L trims are fairly basic, with power features, tilt steering, and dual front airbags. ABS brakes are not offered. The new RS is loaded with leather trim, cruise control, a sunroof, ABS brakes, and foglights. A CD player and leather seats are optional. The Outback Sport is the wagon version of the Impreza, offering up to 64 cubic feet of cargo room with the seats folded down, a feature not available in the sedans or coupes. It's built for more rugged use, offering splash guards, a roof rack, and a stiffer suspension.
The new 2000 Impreza RS sedan and coupe are big hits with drivers looking for a little zip to their morning commute. The entire Impreza lineup is fun to drive and takes turns tightly and crisply. As always, the AWD performance is top-notch. Complaints mention the limited rear legroom, the bad location of the cupholders in front of the air vents, and the eternal desire for even more and more power.

Great car. Totally reliable if not a little ratty.
Biggest complains are the rear-seats not folding or having a passthrough, and how dated the interior is.
Other than that, the car is well made, easy to work on and a ton of fun to drive.Dec 16, 2011

The 2.2l engine used in these cars was an absolutely fantastic engine, but as far as modifying it, it can be very limited in options compared to a 2.5 or 2.0. The car is an absolute blast to drive (on and off road :) ) and one of the most reliable cars i know!Jul 22, 2011

parts in Sri Lanka. i like the mechanical side of
the SUBURU.. um enjoying it and loving it.. nice

This car was just a 2.2 L, I had no idea there existed a sport model impreza when it was purchased. The wrx had yet to come stateside and the STi was still years from making its roar down U.S. streets. All in all it was a great car, it earned some awards, and has become a little famous on the interwebs. It ushered me into the subaru world and allowed me to make some great long term friends. I never had an issue with this car. The motor had 64,000 miles on it when I bought, I had just hit 81,000 last summer when it was wrecked. I had planned on keeping this car for many many years. It was eventually going to see a Ej207 swap or Ej2577 swap. I wanted this thing to scream and had the body and suspension complete when it was trashed.Jan 06, 2011

last of the real rally cars. powerful and elegant - needs a stronger chassy but like
all jap cars will crumble when its hit. fuel is expensive (400k's to a 60L) and so is
upkeep. brakes have been modified - full slotted rotors all round and high
composite race pads so brakes like a dream. rear lsd fitted to fix any steering
issues. acceleration is blistering and handles like a dream. a crazy fun car to drive

I got this car from a young and DUMB waiste of space. But I can't hold that against the car. It handes great, breakes are kinda mushy, Appearance is great. The gas mileage is what you would expect from an AWD. 25MPG-Highway. As far as it stands I would recommend this car to anyone looking for an oldie but a goodie. :)May 20, 2010

Another car I just had to drive to see if it lived up to the hype, etc. when it first came out. I visited my local Subaru dealer (Sierra in Monrovia) and they had one of these on hand. I told the salesman that I was interested in a test drive of the WRX. He said it would not be possible. I asked to talk to the manager and he agreed to a test drive, but they required a credit check. I agreed and I had to wait about 15 minutes for this to occur. We then went out to the car and the salesman naturally had to start the car. First thing he told me was that it was necessary to allow the car to idle for about a minute to allow oil to flow to the turbo bearings before driving off. By the time he had introduced me to the amenities of the car, we were off to the driveway out the lot. We then exchanged places. At this point he told me that I was to turn right four times as soon as possible - basically just make the block. I told him that I waited 15 minutes for them and I was going to take the car for a test drive. I asked him to make sure his seat belt was tight and we were off. The car is very spry and I was always confident that it would follow all commands - acceleration, turning, braking. This was a great car and it was reasonably priced. From a standing start there was a bit of lag for the turbo to kick in, but when it did, it was very strong. I drove the hatchback version which had decent space for 4 people and a little room in the back. It is a nice package and was a lot of fun to drive. Mar 29, 2010

no turbo, but doesnt hold me back from taking advantage of the always active AWD. this car does great in the snow and in the dirt, minus the fact that mine is lowered. this is probably one of the sturdiest cars i have driven, next to the previous Subaru i owned. i love this car and have no intentions of ridding myself of it ANYTIME SOON. i will drive this car until it blows up, thats how much i love it.Nov 29, 2009

go-kart like handling, AWD, tough agressive styling, very rare car, only 18000 sold in the years it was available. Very little maintenance cost, gets about 350 km per tank of fuel, for the way I drive it. This car is a blast to drive and I would be hard pressed to back to a 2wd vehicle.Sep 22, 2009

One word to describe this car: Fun. Driving it for 2 months, this subaru impreza 2.5rs is a blast to drive. A roller coaster ride on the on and off ramps. I would say its quick for an NA. This car can tackle through dirt,snow, and tarmac. This car has lived up to its name in the WRC world. Comes with a spoiler to give that sporty look.Good on gas since its a 4cyl.

Performance - handling is amazing...fun in the snow!
Build Quality - a few minor repairs...expected for a 9yo car.
Appearance - love the exterior! Very sporty.
Cost of Ownership - a little lower on mpg than expected....other than a wheel bearing and a knock senosr, just regualr maintenance.

Performance - Considering it is still N/A it is amazing
throttle response and handling is very satisfiying. (my car
is not stock but still) Build Quality it is good not the best as
my car is now 9 yrs old it has had its share of rattles and
squeaks considerably more than my bmw but that is
comparing apples to oranges. I absolutely love the
exterior and interior I could use a upgrade to a new style
interior. Gas mileage i am still able to get a good avg of 21
mpg maintenance I would say if ya take care of it at the
right intervals problems shouldn't occur. Fun Factor this
car has plenty! I would totally recommend this car to a
friend if they are looking for a 4wd classic without breaking

I love this car... not so much because of looks or performace, but more for sentimental reasons. I've been on several road trips with it, it drove my now-wife around looking for places for the wedding, it helped move us into our first apartment, and it just now helped move us into our first house. Since purchasing this car used, I've had very little trouble with this car. It's beautiful, and handles quite well with the limited slip differentials it has paired to its all wheel drive drivetrain. The car is incredibly safe, and a good 500 lbs lighter than the later Imprezas, making this generation feel much more tossable. When Subaru Impreza 2.5RS sadly it came out on US it was N/A instead of Turbo. That's the one of only minus part, but other than that, looks good, can go pretty much anywhere, drive perfectly fine in the blizzard, fairly good gas mileage, very confy, what more you can ask....? This 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS is a knock out for the pocket rocket family. Its powered by a 2.5L H4 SOHC engine. The engine puts out a solid 165 horses and 166-lbs of torque with awd. The Rally Sport edition comes with an intriguing exterior that is equipped with a rear spoiler, sporty 16inch allow wheels, hood scoop and vents, stylish front bumper with working fog lamps and a moon roof. Although the acceleration and speed is great its also equipped with 4-disc brakes and ABS. The car sits at a nice height with a Rally Sport tuned suspension with front and rear sway bars to increase control on those tight turns in any type of weather. The interior is relatively satisfying with comfortable bucket seats with a sporty two toned cloth followed to the rear bench and the door cards, leather wrapped steering wheel, a decent 4 speaker stereo system and green lit gauges and controls. I have a 2000 Subaru Impreza outback sport. I have a motor from a 1997 of the same make and model. The wiring harness from the 97 doesn't have the same plugs. Any ideas on a work around. Both motors are EJ22.
