In 2000, the Dodge Durango came in four trims -- SLT, SLT-Plus (more power options and leather upholstery), Sport, and R/T Sport. The 5.2-liter, 230-hp V8 was only available in 2WD models. In 4WDs, it was replaced by the more fuel efficient 4.7-liter, 235-hp V8. This engine was paired with an electronic automatic transmission, a re-engineered suspension, and rack and pinion steering, to improve the driveability and acceleration. The 3.9-liter V6, which used to come standard, was gone in 2000.
The R/T trim featured the monster 5.9-liter, 245-hp V8 engine, appropriate for a performance model. To complete this image, it adds leather interior, R/T badges, 17-inch wheels, and a nice engine rumble that hints at the spirit of a sports car trapped in the body of a truck.
All models featured the Enhanced Accident Response system, which sprung into action as soon as the airbags deployed. Standard second row bench seat (buckets optional) and third row bench seat folded flat for lots of storage. The Durango could hold a lot, and with its powerful engines, transporting heavy loads was not a problem.
For all its big-bodied personality, the 2000 Durango rides relatively quietly and has an excellent turn ratio. One drawback to its size is a tendency to get knocked around on windy days, giving the impression it might easily roll over. Drivers like the good visibility, easily-foldable rear seats, and the voluminous interior. What they could do without is the lousy gas mileage, the cheap-looking plastic dashboard controls, and the repairs, repairs, repairs.

Loved the 3-rows, can fit 7-8ppl, was in an accident about 4years ago and the bumper guard truly saved this truck from extensive damage; people notice this truck, its very rugged and is a true beast! Easy to handle and maneuver. Side mirrors are big, but once you get used to them you learn to look around them for blind spots. Mar 18, 2015

Overall i Liked this vehicle. It has everything a large family needs such as room and storage. It is comfortable to drive and has off road capabilities. I enjoyed this vehicle very much and would own one again if it was for the 11/15 fuel economy.

I've had this car in my family since we bought it brand new. It has been on numerous road trips and has accumulated over 199,000 miles in its 15 years. I use it as a daily driver and for camping trips and the occasional winter jaunt to Tahoe to ski and snowboard. All in all this car is fantastic and I would love to own another one along side my current one!Sep 25, 2014

Gas mileage not the greatest but vehicle has been a reliable mode of transportation for me for the time that I've had it. Just tuned it with spark plugs and coolant serviced. Tires are relatively new approximately 95% wear left.Jun 07, 2014

Very quick little V8, has a 4.7L, automatic, 4x4. Good on and off the road, except in deep mud holes that eat half your truck. Good family SUV, gets you around with 2 car seats 4 adults and 2 dogs. Good on gas mileage for a SUV with a V8. Maintenance how ever on a 4.7L is much more expecive then on the 318 or 360, but still easy to fix. great truck! has break-thru 4.7l V8 with just as much power as a 360!! better mpg!4wheel is awsome!! has about 22in of virt movement for off road!! 3rd row seat is great for the kids! only downfall is it is a lil too top heavy. will tip very easily n the ass end gets a lil loose in the rain. which makes it fun to drive.May 24, 2011

R/T Great truck. Too damn slow for a 5.9 Has a great look to it. Alot of torque could use some more horse power. Does awesome in the snow. Sounds beast. drinks gas like there is no tomarrow. Has no problem towing. Could use a better transmission although i do drive the piss out of it.Nov 19, 2010

First American SUV experience.Leased for 2 years. No major problems in those years. Loved the power and aggressive exterior appearance. Gas consumption was fair. Had a 4.7 L V8 with 235 hp. Ride is rugged and very fun when offroading. Had ample power for towing and adventures. 4WD system was great. Was a bit tight in the rear with he 8 seater. Handling was solid. Often took it for fishing trips with a boat. Never owned it long enough to know if there were any major issues. Wished that I owned it longer the technically a gas guzzling ended the relationship. Performance - Even with a 5.9 it is still just a heavy brick on wheels.
Build Quality - Has it needed repairs? Ha!!! Let's just say I owned it for a little more than a year and I think I replaced every part on it. Some even twice.
Appearance - The only thing this thing has going for its self is that it is a spacious brick.
Cost of Ownership - I have 3x the value of the truck put into just in parts. These things are notorious for having bad gas mileage so don't even ask.
Fun Factor - The only time this thing is fun is when there is snow on the ground. The rest of the time its parked in the garage.

On the sides of the seating are leather, if it is in the sun very long the leather gets
very hot.They do not require much maintenance. They get pretty good gas mileage for a v8 and 4*4. There very fun to use to play in the mud and water.Jun 25, 2010

This car is a good four wheel drive. It has lots of power and handles very well
for a for wheel drive. The braking could be better though. The Durango I have
has the 4.7 magnum in it. This suv has great build quality. I wrecked it not to
long ago and it hardly did any damage to my truck. It only messed up the
plastic pieces on the front end of the suv. This suv looks like an suv should. It
is not to fancy and has that mean look to it. the look like it is ready to take on
anything. The only major downside to this vehicle is the gas mileage. I only
get about 15 miles to the gallon. This suv is very fun to drive. It can withstand
everything and has never been stuck before. Even during a super bad ice
storm we had a couple years ago. There was around 10 - 12 inches of solid ice

Very Comfortable truck to drive, Very responsive in the mud. Fully Loaded, Leather
seat are easy to clean. After owning a couple of 4x4's before this is the best one

It was an Enterprise Rental vehicle back in May 2000. The drive was from central NJ to Boston, MA via I-95 and I-395.
It had the SLT trim, I believe it had the 4.7L V8, given the average highway fuel economy was around 17-18 MPG with stuff cargo and a few items on the roof with enough room for a driver and two addtional passengers.
Given it was a 4x4 and its matching tires, on the highway I notice some vibrations. The transfer case shifter could be a stretch for someone with short arms.
The controls on the dash are easy to reach and nicely layed out. With cruise control buttons on the four spoke steering wheel, which on the dash will indicate if it is on and whether a speed has been set.
Under the rear cargo floor has additional compartments as well as on the sides of the cargo area.Oct 06, 2009

The thing flies...it weighs in at roughly 5,200lbs and
goes 0-60 in around 6 sec...QUICK...i love the way it
looks...well, looked...and the fact that it has the much
rarer, much better performing 5.9 liter magnum v8.
Also, it is a tank because of the sheer weight and it is

The R/T 5.9 is an outstanding vehicle. More power than it needs. The factory exhuast system sounds great. I replaced the sound system and added a pair of subs. replaced the rims for chrome OEM's. Repairs and upgrades are easy to do. Great for long trips. I love driving this suv!Dec 02, 2008

I don't know about Dodges in general, but they're awesome to look at, very attractive. However, in my experience, Dodges fall apart increadibly easy and are below average with preformance. The Durango has needed countless repairs and is constantly in the shop, the acceleration doesn't work half the time, handling is tough if you usually drive smaller cars, and if you own one, you'd better be used to replacing your own brakes.. That being said, I've driven a few dodges before including the new Charger. The Charger was amazing: precise handeling, powerful engine, physical beauty, and although I know Dodge isn't too reliable compared to other makes I can't help but loving their vehicles.Nov 03, 2008

This was my first vehicle when i got my license. The power that the 360 put out was unbelieveable, all the torque was there. WHAT DO I DO WHEN THE MECHANIC IS WRONG?
I took my Durango in for an alignment after I just put on new inner & outer tie rods on both sides, the shop said that they cant align it because of a bad upper ball joint on the passengers side. Looks like im gonna now have to do ball joints. BUT, the mechanic had said that he is 90% sure that I put the outer tie rod in the steering knuckle upside down! I have spent hours looking through the internet at pictures, etc. for the tie rods on my 2000 dodge durango & they all show the outer tie rod ball joint has the threads pointing up in the steering knuckle, just like I did on mine. The alignment guy has to be wrong! What do I do? Though I am expecting to replace the ball joints, after they claim just the upper passenger side ball joint is bad, if I do one im gonna do them all. But to do this will take a lot of driving around, which concerns me, not about the ball joints but the alignment issue. Since they didn’t align it, I am worried what harm could that cause? Is it dangerous? Can something break? It feels ok driving, but it always had even before the new tie rods. I didn’t even know the inner tie rods were bad until I took it in to have a few of the lug nut studs replaced and when up on the rack the mechanic notified me, he said only the inner ones but I replaced both inner & outer. I have even checked a few times for bad ball joints when doing the tie rods while up on jacks. I found no play, only play at 9 & 3 o'clock, indicating faulty tie rods. Again, what should I be concerned about, if anything driving my durango being outta of alignment? Should I get a second opinion? Would it be safe to drive it another shop? THANK YOU

DETERIORATING HEADLINER
Does any one have any suggestions of what I can do to about my deteriorating headliner in my 2000 Dodge Durango. I tried spray glue and I was very pleased of how it was working until the next day when I found it all hanging down much worse. It seems to me that the "steriphone type material" underneath the "cloth type materiel" wouldn’t hold because of the deteriorating material crumbling. I can't think of any solutions, not even a clue. It's really bad now, interfering with my vision. THANK YOU
