The 1998 Toyota 4Runner finally gave drivers the additional power for which they had been searching: the base engine was now a 2.7-liter I4, with a 3.4-liter V6 as an option (and standard on some trims, such as the Limited). Optional leather trim does make for a luxurious ride, although reviewers note that the SUV still feels a bit truck-like, whereas SUV's such as the Lexus RX300 have worked to integrate car-like comfort into their interiors. Reviewers have also started to recognize that the 4RUnner gets good mileage-for an SUV. Estimates range from 15-22 mpg, depending on city or highway driving, as well as owner driving style.

Toyotas are reliable and maintenance costs on them, compared to other brands, are fairly low. The 4Runner is a rugged SUV which also offers a comfortable ride. Gas mileage on the 4Runner isnt great compared to other smaller SUVs like the Rogue, Sportage or Sante Fe or Rav4 but you get more back cargo space, more inside space and pretty good handling and turning radius to make up for it. a powerful car, very spacious, good for family drives , good when moving households and reliable. The look of the car is elegant yet sporty. drives very comfortable. The only problem i find is it is not very quiet when driving (unlike all the other luxury cars !)Sep 15, 2014

This car eats up gas.
Make sure to put 89 when pumping.
Good suv for road trips and for families.
Really good car to keep.

The 1998 Toyota SUV Limited 4 Wheel drive is an excellent choice for those living in winter climates and need the extra insurance of never getting stuck.
The 4 Runner has always been one the best choices for overall durability
and I agree.

great vehicle with 254000 miles and not a single issue yet. We take it on family vacations and occasionally (very occasionally due to it being my wife's SUV). after I did the deck plate mod the fuel mileage went up surprisingly. no complaints on it at this time.Jul 07, 2013

It is a sure footed stable suv that feels great on as well as offroad. Even has locking rear differential which is only found elsewhere on the land cruiser. Plenty of power in town, good torque, hwy speed passing is another thing, it has grunt but not a lot of speed. After 281k miles and still going, I would have to say everything has held up beyond any person possible expectations, still looks, sounds, and drives great. It is a tank that just wont die. Some maintenance is expensive, timming belt job is over $1000, but only needed every 150k miles. Oh, and this is my second 4runner, I actually drove my other one into a lake, pulled it out, dried it out, and it still runs just like before.Sep 24, 2012

It's a truck and it rides and drives like one. The V6 offers better than average performance however I only get about 17 mpg with my slightly heavier tires. However it's a Toyota so it needs almost no maintenance, also the build quality is great. I love the way it looks and drives. The power rear window is my favorite feature!Feb 28, 2011

its a good car but yet its hard to maintain clean. its great for the dirt and it fits 10
people in it. runs pretty fast and has lots of room for caping trips.. awesome ride

I think my SUV is great. It has alot of room for family, friends and anything else you want to put in it. I've had it for 8 years and never had any major problems with the motor, transmission, or rearend as they have recalled in the past. The inside and outside is very stylish..LOL. It isn't top heavy like the explorers or chevy blazers. You can use it for towing boats, jet skis and ect. Aug 24, 2010

rides smooth, fun to drive, gets ok gas mileage when you drive it how its supposed to be driven. looks new garage kept, has good acceleration and great breaking, when the oil is changed and the from end is alligned it handles very well.Sep 10, 2009

The 4Runner is equiped with a 3.4 liter DOHC V6 engine and a 5 speed manual transmission. This truck is currently stock except for a custom high flow muffler. It is not the fastest machine, but it can rock a mad baja rippin up the backroads. Jun 23, 2009

This is the perfect combination of everything you could ever need in a car/truck. Awesome build quality, reliability, and resale; seats five, great leg room, huge storage space, sturdy roof rack and 5400lb tow capacity; narrow size and small turning radius for easy parking; 16/22 mpg with a 200HP V6 makes for economy and power; power everything, all kinds of options availible; and styling that will never get old. My mom had one of these, and it was great.It gave some problems, but after 10 years of use and using cheap gas (Shell) the gasoline pumps tend to go bad. Otherwise very reliable, great power and very spacy.
