1998 Ford Taurus wagon has been very good to me. Last 3 cars have been Taurus and this the first wagon. Cargo area is great with lots of space and extra seating if needed. Travel about 60 Miles a day expressway miles so pretty good on gas about 23 highway per gallon.Aug 09, 2013

it has get up and go when i need it. the belts have a tendency to squeal but
de-squeak fixes that :) as for appearance i have no problems i bought it from an

Great car, weak tranny, but i would get another in a heart beat, hard a lot of cargo room, cost on mine was low, very comfy front seats. Drove the hell out of that car and it hauled ass. I would have another anyday of the weekOct 19, 2011

This is a high performance car that uses the Generation 4 Taurus as a platform for some pretty cool componets. It has a 3.4 litre V8 comprised of an alumnium top end built by Yamaha mated to a block developed by Cosworth. When properly cared for it is a silky smooth motor that will freely rev to 7000 rpm. The suspension is nothing like a regular G4 Taurus. It also has larger front disks and rear disks (standard Taurus has drum brakes). The engine makes it the consumate Interstate hauler, also at home on the twists.
The build quality otherwise is all late 20c Ford, which is to say substandard. It is nowhere near the build quality of our 2001 Camry. As a result, at 12 years old, the cheap interior parts as well some exterior parts have needed to be replaced. Thus the junkyard is your friend. There are many Taurii in my local junkyard, and I seem to be there most everymonth for some lil nickel and dime part. But I love tinkering with it.
As for fun factor, the car is a blast to drive. It is a sleeper car so it is fun to leave rice rockets and other perf cars behind at the stoplight. The other car starts to inch up and you just press the throttle and tease them. As a measure, it is just a bit slower than a 4.6 litre Mustang GT. But you can carry 5 in comfort while doing it as the Taurus has an enormous interior. The best way to describe its twistability is that you'll find yourself on a twisty road with 30 mph speed limit driving with no strain. Then you look at the speedo and you are in fact doing 55. The car simply hates to go less than 50 mile an hour. It is really at home doing 85 on the interstate. I have had the car up to 120 mph for a 20 minute stretch and it was stable and comfortable, not strained at all. The top speed of the vehicle is supposed to e 140mph. I havent done that yet....

This car had the 24V 200 HP V6 which, at the time, was a fairly hot engine - especially for a family car like the Taurus wagon. This vehicle was an excellent family hauler and was very comfortable to drive. Could even get the front wheels to burn a little rubber off the line! Pretty tame styling and fairly bland, but very comfortable, interior. Lots of room to haul "stuff". No problems with the car in over 80,000 km. Very dependable - no squeaks or rattles.Apr 05, 2010

Good power, excellent handling, roomy. Very dependable for an affordable daily driver. Mileage is fair, overall quality is typical for american cars of its day. Can be suprising on open roads, is faster than it looks. Oval body lines are a love it or leave it thing, you either like it or not.Jan 25, 2010

There is not many aftermarket body kits and stuff. The stereo sucks too, so I'm putting a new one in soon. For an average sedan it only get 21 MPGs. The handling of this car is great. Accelaration is just about right. Nice big interior. A Perfect First CarSep 04, 2009

it has a quick acceleration, and still runs good for being 10 years old. the brakes squeak sometimes, but otherwise can stop on a dime. It has needed transmission oil hose replaced. theres a few small scratches here and there, but otherwise good appearence. Gets good gas mileage. its alright to drive i dont really speed alot or go on curvy roads much i got minor check ups and i got 2 tires cause others were low on tred. \

its a quick car, keeps up with v6 mustangs and camaros, but has the ability to drive in snow. only 68,000 miles :) a little rare on these cars. all leather, mach sound system, 6 disk cd, all the goodies. looks great almost flawless paint. very fun to drive, handles exellently and doesnt even feel fast at speeds over 80. exellent suspension, soft like a car, but still firm enough to be sportyApr 11, 2009

Performance: from a dead stop it takes a little under 10 seconds to get to 60, will hit 111mph governor going downhill, braking is the same as any other 3300lb Ford sedan, handles like a bathtub with traction control.
Build Quality: it's not the prettiest thing in the world, but it's built like a tank; aside from the normal 10-year-old car sounds, just the seat springs are a tad squeaky, other than that it's a trooper.
Appearance: it might as well be a bubble, everything is circular (dash, headlights, windows, even the body).
Cost of Ownership: gets 20mpg with a light foot around the city, about 26mpg on the highway, have put about $3k into it with misc repairs and tuneups (it sat for 3 years, and survived through 2' of snow for 2 weeks one year).

did not really like this car design or driving.
was wife's choice and she quickly regretted it.
she really wanted the station wagon, but the saleman put us up with a sedan instead.

This is a great family car, lots of room. I bought so that I would be able to have room for my son. The car has all leather, 6 disc changer in the trunk, sunroof, all the bells and whistles. It has pretty good performance, considering the weight of the car. Sep 10, 2008

It's slooowwwwwwww, but it is a good first car and kind of average. Unfortunatly it is a gas hog only returning 16 miles per gallon barely in city driving. Had to replace the power steering pump after i got it and still have yet to replace the shocks on it, replacing the power steering pump took all day and it was a pain my grandpa has an acronym for ford (found on roadside dead) due to difficulties working on fords (he's a mechanic).Aug 14, 2008

ahah the ford. well this car as you may know is just one of the most ugly things on the road and is reserved for mostly old people or for people who cannot afford well a better car. However i do have to say this car does have great pickup and weve generated some tire spin before lol. The breaks are also something to commend. the sterio sucks but works and thats what matters rightl. Oo speaking of working good luck finding one with a working power antenna i know our kind of works but doesnt go all the way down. The ride is not that great and the seats are a bit uncomfertable but if ur a teen ull be saying its a car lol. Buiild quality its an american car so ur probably say umm no. However in all of its 10 year life its just barely biginning to show porblems. However with resale foreget it ur loosing all sorts of cash. Our is worth 2500 which is 300 less than the volvo we also have which is 5 years older! however this car does have 8 seats which is nice when ur lugging people around. be careful though this car is low to the ground. anywasi really woldnt suggest this car try something else.Jul 15, 2008

Bought it from my sister a year and a half ago, drove it from 148,000 miles to 165,000 before a problem popped up. Then, I found out the transmission fluid was changed only 3-4 times (supposed to be once every 30,000 miles... You do the math.) Then, the transmission pump (literally) shattered in the valve body, causing the transmission to not do anything at all. We threw a new valve body on thurr and she was good to go for a bit. Then the power steering and fuel pump went. Fixed that, then the transmission popped its "lower input drum" (don't ask me what that is, that's just what the tranny shop said) at 169,500 miles, apparently the metal from the pump went everywhere inside the transmission. Anyways, got it rebuilt ($1865), and now it's running good again. 173,000 miles. In synopsis, CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AS SCHEDULED!Jul 02, 2008

i bought because i was desperate for soem wheels and ended up really appreciating this car for it's dependability and comfort. i'm not easy on it and in 3 yrs + of ownership has only had one problem (crank sensor). the transmission acted up for a while, i put in some lucas and eventually it seemed to repair itself...bonus lol.Apr 11, 2008

98 ford taurus. Jerky and jumping mostly when idling.
98 ford taurus. Started getting jumpy when I would put it in reverse and held brake, but once I started driving, all was good. Suddenly started jerking and jumping when stopped (no matter what gear), does it a little when moving but barely noticeable when moving. Doesn't die and starts fine. I checked transmission fluid, cleaned battery terminals and checked for loose cables. Air filter looked good but installing new one tomorrow just in case. No engine noise, no smoke from exhaust. I'm thinking dirty injectors and hoping not a bad fuel pump. Guesses?
