The four-door Mazda MPV minivan received a sporty exterior update in 1997. Most versions of the MPV came with a All-Sport exterior trim package, which included a sportier grille, wheel openings, and rear bumper, as well as a roof rack, alloy wheels, and two-tone exterior paint. Mazda also narrowed the MPV lineup for 1997, offering the minivan in only four versions -- an LX version in two-wheel or four-wheel drive, and a higher-end ES version with two-wheel or four-wheel drive. All models came with four-wheel anti-lock brakes, also a new addition for 1997.
Across the line, power was provided by a 3.0-liter V6 engine that produced 155 horsepower. A four-speed automatic was the only transmission available.
Standard features for the MPV LX included power windows, dual airbags, cruise control, fog lights, power door locks, power exterior mirrors, and an AM/FM/cassette radio. The ES version added leather captain's chairs, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a rear heater, and a self-leveling system, among other features.
Overall, drivers found the Mazda MPV to be roomy, functional, and versatile. The four hinged doors, as opposed to the rear sliding doors found on many minivans, were a positive point with some drivers. As far as build quality was concerned, drivers were mixed in their opinions, with some reporting few problems with their vehicles and others reporting having frequent problems requiring repairs.

I love the car. I got it for a great price and have had a couple of issues. It has been great though. The only problem is the oil leak. We can't seem to track it in the engine. Great though.Sep 28, 2011

First of all I have owned Mazda's for 42 years,I always buy the top models, Be cheep get cheep. I have a 1997 MPV allsport 4X4 130,000 miles on it. It pulls our 19 foot boat to the ocean launch and home, pulls my 17 foot boler travel trailer on 2000 or more miles trips through B.C and down the U.S.A. without any problems, Fuel mileage is really good for a van that weighs 4100 lb. 300 miles on average to 13 CAN gallons (16.3 US gallons) 23 mpg CAN (18 miles per gallon US,short trips around town, 17 mpg(CND) towing the travel trailer on holidays through the mountains of B.C. It came with the towing package with a bigger rad. transmittion cooler. Never a problem, Just change the oils with synthetic all around, The 4 wheel drive with the center differencial lockup for tough going in the snow or getting to the small lakes off road with the 3500 lb. travel trailer makes easy going,Lots of ground clearance. I will be replacing the timing belt this week, as it is due. The 97s and 98s with the new 2 tone paint and trim look nice. mine is white and silvery gray, nice rims and a good tire size, Quiet to drive and very comfortable, I'm 6'2 and big so a car does not work for me anymore ( and did I say OLD) well 66 is OK!
This is an update Nov. 24, 2012. Well my MPV has 159,588 miles on it now. Had the timing belt and and water pump replaced with real Mazda parts at little over 130,000 miles, and then at 150,000 miles had the brakes on the front replaced for the first time, hard to believe but the stock Mazda brake are ceramic, so I had new ceramic brakes put on it. They are twice the price but it the if the first ones lasted 150,000 miles these will last of the life of the van. The next thing I am going to replace is the fuel pump as this is also original, they are about $200 and easy to replace, This Van has so much original parts it makes me wonder, I keep checking every thing twice, but happy
June 23,2015 update, Just had the timing belt replaced at 188,000 miles, also had to replace oil seals on the front of the camshaft, they were leaking a little this is the first time that the motor had to have a repair $40.00 over the cost of the timing belt, cheap, Well I have been transporting around the new fuel pump for about 40,000 miles in the car for when the original packs it in,I think I'll install it this summer just so its done. I had the work done at the local Mazda dealer, they do it right with properly trained tradesmen.
the fuel mileage is still holding on, the last trip to the interior of B.C., 400 miles took 13.5 Canadian gallons,29.6 miles to the gallon (15.7 US gallons,25.46 miles to the US gallon ) Its still a keeper and if your doing the math i'm 71 now and cheep as the come, it comes with age you know Jan 06, 2010

although it is under powered and gas milage is not that great.May 22, 2007
Reviews say that the cheap chips don't work. No one that I've talk to yet seems to have any relatively inexpensive way to make this thing go faster. Can I put a more powerful used engine in it, if so, which ones will fit , so I can start looking for it. Thanks!
I have my dash apart replacing the stereo and I found a filter behind the glove box. I'm assuming it's an air filter. It falls apart to the touch. I can't find any information on it, so here i am. It looks difficult to remove. It's not just a pop in and out thing like i have seen on newer cars. Can anyone help?
ALMOST 2K MILES WHEN SOLD TO ME 3 MONTHS AGO. 1ST THE GAS HAND IS OFF. READS MORE THAN WHAT'S ACTUALLY IN THE TANK;I HAVE TO HOLD THE GAS PUMP ENTIRE TIME WHILE PUMPING;LEVELER & CHECK ENGINE LIGHT USED TO JUST COME ON UPON STARTING THEN GO OFF; STARTED LEAKING TRANSMISSION FLUID. I FILLED IT A FEW TIMES ALREADY; HAVE PUT IN OIL IT WAS VERY LOW. WHEN LOW ON GAS IT BARLEY TURNS OR EXCELLERATES;IT MAKES A POPPING SOUND LIKE THERE'S AIR FLOWING THROUGH THE GAS LINE OR SOMETHING. (I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CARS JUST GUESSING). YESTERDAY EARLY MORNING MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON& WOULDN'T GO OFF. I PUT SOME GAS IN,CHECKED OIL& WATER THEY WERE FINE. DIDN'T CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID COULDN'T FIND THE DIP STICK; I RAN A FEW ERRANDS AROUND TOWN. LATER THAT AFTERNOON I TRIED DRIVING ACROSS TOWN. IT STARTED SPUTTERING AND WOULDN'T EXCELLERATE PAST 20 MPH.SO I PUT FLASHERS ON& SLOWLY DROVE TO A SAFE LOCATION. ANY HELP AT ALL WOULD BE GREATLY DEEPLY APPRECIATED.
