Bought my 1990 Cherokee Limited new in 1989. Bought it for a family car, had a new baby on the way. Wife at the time loved it, and drove it daily for years. After the divorce, she wanted a sportier car so, I got the Jeep and drove it another 7 years, till my Moms car broke down. She was in her 80s and loved the ride, and height of the Jeep so I gave it to her, and she and my sister used it for 18 years more, We celebrated her 99th birthday in July, and my sister got herself her first new car, So I brought the Jeep back to Montana and have been driving it daily for 2 months, I forgot how much fun it is, and how much more comfortable it is compared to my 2012 Chevy Tahoe... Currently the 4.0L 6cyl is getting 22.6mpg, unless towing a heavy trailer. it has over 249,000 miles and still holding good compression at 125lbs per cylinder + or - 3lbs... Sep 22, 2024

i talked with the owner several times over the past 2 weeks during a recent search for a solid running classic in my current price range. maybe it was the sunshinest day we've seen this spring or trudging through so many inappropriate vehicles but when i got an upclose underneath hood up look round test drive this was the Car search winner! after insurance when we're better aquinted i'll update the review...pictures to follow~its been Beauteous these last 36 hours tho ;-) Apr 08, 2013

I liked the 4 wheel drive selection, the way it handles on and offroad the great offroad look. I have only jad to work on this jeep one time I changed the starter. It is not the most comfortable thing I have ever drove but the heater works excellent and I liked the power windows that alot of older jeeps dont have.Jan 12, 2012

I loved this car, it was great on everything, all the breaks on it were cheap and fairly easy but it was a fun car its a shame i drove like an idiot in and wrecked it. i had to redo the brakes a few times that was the only bad issue on it but i think that was because of my driving but, it was running strong 200,000 miles and could have kept going for a whileOct 19, 2011

Bought the car when I was 16 for $1,700 out-right.
I have owned it for roughly 5 yrs now and it still
is working. I replaced the starter, a new water
pump, and new tires. Over all just looking to get

This was a great very capable vehicle overall, I got it at the end of its life. Not due to a failure, but a lack of previous maintenance. I ended up using it for parts for another Jeep. It had many of the common XJ's having including oil leaks and floor rust problems, but it got me were I needed to go.Feb 15, 2011

overall an awesome car, minor problems, and easy to work on. i have driven mine everyday back and forth to school. handles a little bit touchy, but it has been a great and reliable first car, easpecially for young drivers.Sep 07, 2010

It was a good starter sport utilaty vilacal.
Always got my where I needed to go, just wish jeep made them less boxy.
Cost of ownership is high, like most Jeeps, but worth every penny.

Rear Axle sucks, motor and transmission is good. Decent rock climber. Overall nice ride with a lift and big tires. Cheap insurance aswell. Fuel milage isnt too bad considering It has 4.10 gears in the front and rear axles. Cheap to buy.Jan 06, 2010

Great to four wheeling. Easy to work on. Axles could be a little stronger. Power windows like to go out easily.

1990 xj, with the 4.0, dana 30 in front and dana 35 in rear, automatic, has a pacesetter header with a super 44 flowmaster muffler, has rancho springs, shocks, and control arms, and 2 inch blocks in the back. big horn maxxis tires. I love my jeep! It does great offroading even when it was just stock! I plan on finding a dana 44 to replace my 35 and maybe a storker kit for the 4.0 in the future.Nov 04, 2009

Just was owned by a "slow" person before me. But it runs fine now that i have gotten it fixed up decntly. Mine gets 10-12 MPG's but i think there are a few parts that need tuning or replacing still.Jul 02, 2009

267,000 miles later and it still rams through fences pretty well with minimal maintenance :)
Killer gas mileage but ugly as hell!
Parts and maintenance is super cheap. You can always find another wrecked junker Jeep. Easy to work on, you can see all the parts :)Jun 08, 2009

purchased in 2002 have had it through three Colorado blizzards, when everything else was stuck this little Cherokee kept on going. Never left me stranded in weather or because of break down. only thing I would change is location of rear seat belts they need a tie back when the seat is down.May 03, 2009

love the full body. warm in the winter and cool in th summer. dislike the unibody. needs a frame for lifting and modifications. Its hard to put in lager engines. but possible. the best part is some came with a dana44 rear. around 1987. bolts right up. the 35 is good up to 33 inch tires but the 30 up front could use some steering upgrades at that size of tire. overall excilent vehicle. plenty of room. and lots of different trim packages. and the parts are easy to find. its a jeep. need i say more?Jan 09, 2009

This Jeep is great on and off road. Its quick off the line and pulls great off road. The engine, tranny, and transfer case are built almost bullet proof. I would recommend this jeep to anybody who likes a daily driver and likes to spend some time off road on the weekendNov 29, 2008

insane torque for this small of a motor, mines as old as me and its finally starting to wear out! Ill just keep putting money in it as I love it.

Rear main seal leaks, a lot. 4.0 L motor is very strong even with 196,000 miles. 4x4 is somewhat a pain in the ass with the vaccum actuationJun 22, 2008

OK so I suppose for a car that never got driven it wasn't that bad. We had problems with it from the first year we owned it.. but overall it wasn't bad. Just don't plan on keeping a Jeep of any kind after the warranty runs out unless you REALLY want to spend some time and $$ in the repair shop.May 16, 2008

it was all plastic that either fell off or broke off. the gear box went twice first time i got it reconditioned second time replace they have a toyoto gear box in them which isn't made to take the load of a 4 wheel driving. if you are looking at buying one make shore you try the 4x4 mode because some of them had falty mechanisms and once it was ingaged it cant be taken out to 2 wheel drive again Apr 28, 2008

Well this jeep is one of my faviorite cars because it is a classic, but there are some draw backs to it. The cooling system for this car is absoluty horrible and so is the braking distance. But the sound of the car is amazing. The 4.0L is a good motor but it deffinately needs some upgrades to perfomance.Mar 22, 2008

Has a 4in. Rusty's lift with 33in. tires. lots of skid plates down below and some extra sheet metal on the sides (mostly to cover the dents and protect from further damage). stock engine and tranny. stock axles. lockers front and rear.upgraded tirod (lol). interior is leather still nice actually. reddish gray carpet (because of red dirt and mud.) 1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo straight 6 4.0 L
I ran into a little problem earlier today and I quite haven’t found a solution to my problem yet but my Jeep will crank but not fire up. I looked at the alternator and battery first both were fine. After I checked those I was able to get it running but now it has started to run rough and barely holds an idle. Once it gets warmed up it idles normally but then after about 15 minutes it does again. I checked my cps sensor and it’s fine and I unplugged each sensor and sprayed it with electrical cleaner but still nothing happens. I’m out of ideas of what it could be. You could say I’m a little more than stumped?
