1968 Volkswagen Beetle Preview summaryImage

Never a company that could be accused of standing still, Volkswagen continued to make both minor and major upgrades to its popular Beetle throughout the 1960s. New for 1968 were larger front and rear brakes, a upgraded carburetor, head restraints built into the front seats, a collapsible steering wheel, larger tail lights, an exhaust emission control system, and an upgraded independent rear suspension system. The bumpers and hubcaps were also redesigned, and for the first time the Beetle came with a plastic dashboard.

Power was provided by a 1500cc engine that produced 53 horsepower. A four-speed manual transmission and telescopic shock absorbers were also part of the package.

Standard features included swiveling sun visors, coat hooks, assist straps, an automatic windshield washer, an overhead light, folding rear seats, and luggage space under the front hood and in a three-foot carpeted compartment behind the rear seats. A convertible top was optional.

The most wonderful perfect vehicle ever created! I love me some Beetles! I put a 1600 in her to replace the 1500 that it originally had; gave a little more power from the right pedal lol. I have been replacing any bad parts with NOS replacements...keeping all of the original parts and the NOS boxes tooApr 08, 2012

I own a 1968 beetle... I named her Delilah... It has always been my dream car and having went my whole life never stepping foot in a bug until the day I bought Delilah, I have to say she drives like a dream...The rumble of a vintage engine and the need to actually press the brake to stop, makes my heart race...I love the manual window cranks and the lack of fancy gadgets inside... pure nostalgia...I feel like every time I start her up Im stepping back in time... Also like Im not only a "player" of the punch buggy game I am now "the game" itself and I am spreading buggy love everywhere I drive... so far the gas mileage is great as well... nothing beats a bug!!!Mar 10, 2011
