1964 was the first year of production for the legendary Ford Mustang muscle sports car. Production began in the second half of the year, after approximately 18 months of planning and design, a relatively short time for a new car project even today. The short time is largely attributed to the decision to use as many existing mechanical parts as possible. So the 1964 Mustang was a unique concept with no equivalent in the market, but based on many existing parts. As many of you may know, any Mustang made before September 1964 was considered a 1964 1/2 (like the famous 1963 prototype).
FACT: The first Mustang was a Ford Falcon stretched a couple of inches.

I like everything about this car, it drives great, gets lots of looks, does great at mustang shows, the gas mileage is great, have to use premium gas, if you like classic mustangs this is a great car and for those who know a very rare 4th day production is very hard to come by.Apr 10, 2014

Love the attention that it gets. Starts up every time I turn the key. The small 289 v8 engine is so easy to deal with and parts are very easy to get. Bow to the first Mustang. Now fifty years old.May 28, 2013

Needs a lot of TLC to bring her back to glory, but is doable. Floor pans are gone, a little cancer on the rear quarters, all the frames for the seats are there. Engine is a 262 in-line 6 single barrel carb, with mud dobber nest for free.Engine does roll over but will need to be rebuilt. Car came from Alabama.Jun 23, 2012

I bought my 64 1/2 Mustang in 1968, when I was a high school senior, just before I graduated. I paid $1000 and bought it from the dealer who sold it originally to the only owner before me.
I know it was a 64 1/2; it was untouched when I got it, and in fantastic shape. In addition to what you see on 'expert' sites, my 'stang had a at least three things you never see mentioned: No back up lights, 4 bolt wheels (I couldn't buy mags for that reason, nobody made them to fit back then), and my favorite proof: When you popped the ring that said 'Ford Mustang' off the center of the horn ring, it said 'Falcon Sprint' on the chrome hub.
The 101 hp, 170 cu in engine had no power and wasn't all that good on gasoline - 18 mpg was typical - but who cared? I will never forget the sound of static from thunderstorms on the AM radio when I was on a date.
I kept the car for three years, until the engine blew up and I sold it to my brother. I would give worlds to have kept it. over the past 40 plus years, I have had many dreams about the car, usually that I found it in the weeds in the lot behind my parent's house, rolled it out, and got it running.
I was sitting in the office this morning and the Beach Boys' 'I Get Around' came on the radio. If ever there was a song made for my Mustang, that was it, Suddently, I was 18, shifting the three-speed transmission, and headed out on a Saturday night.Apr 22, 2012

This is the American classic that helped to define the muscle car era as we fondly
remember it. Power, handling, and style are all off the charts for a 40 year old car.
I haven't shaken a speeding ticket in it yet, but realistically, I didn't plan on it. At
the same time, I don't regret crusin' in it for a secondAug 02, 2011

I like the car because its fast. It has a 6 cylinder engine. It's a manual transmission
so it picks up speed faster This car is probably worth 5 grand in this day and age.

Purchased in May 1964 from Indianapolis this 1964.5 Mustang Indy 500 Pace Car is a rare one! It had a stock 289 engine this was also the fast back version. At the time they only put cheap plastic like stickers to denote the pace car version, which started to peal after a year and half.Feb 25, 2009

Great performance with race engine, 5 speed stick
shift, RRS rack and pinion, disc brakes, composite
springs in the back and lowered/stiffened in the front.
Detroit locker and 4,11 makes it take off pretty good.

I love my car. Mustang has been one of the best vehicles I have ever owned and still own. The performance of these cars are amazing and having the yearly models is the funnest to drive. It is a classic of the American Muscle cars and I will never own anything other than Ford and Mustangs.Nov 25, 2008

This was my very first vehicle when I was in high school. I purchased this 1964 1/2 Mustang from a friend of my dad's and restored it to about 90% original. The car had about 5 paint jobs on it and I sanded the entire car down to bare metal then re-painted it metallic blue. This, unfortunately, was not a muscle car since it had an inline 6 cylinder 250ci engine in it.Oct 06, 2008

This is Bob Taylor. I just bought a 64 1/2 mustang with 57000 > miles on it, nice clean car. My son and I are going to restore this fall. > 260 , C4, Wimbledon white, blue interior. Most people say that there were only 92,705 coupes made. but mine is a original, and the vin# clearly states 204,000 But the Vin# has me > confused. It has two assembly plant codes on it, can you shed some light on > this for us? # 5TF07F204000. I know that the [F] is for Dearborn Mi. and > the [T] is for Metuchen New Jersey, but have you ever seen a car with > both? Any info would be very appreciated. Thanks from the both of us.
Hey everyone, I need some help, My dad was the original owner of a 1964.5 mustang and was forced to sell it in 1968, he doesn't know the VIN but I believe I have figured out everything the data tag would have shown minus the last 6 digits of the VIN does anyone know where I can view a list of VIN numbers that I can look at based on the DSO. My dad is 80 years old and I would really love to find and buy this car back?
My girlfriend has this old Ford Mustang which I believe is a 64.5. I’m still in the process of deciding the vin/warranty number. Maybe someone can help. She wants me to do something with it but, after cleaning it off and inspecting a little closer I found some really bad rust spots. Haven’t even seen under the car. We don’t have a garage or shop of any kind and I don’t fully understand the caliber of this restoration. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
64 1/2 mustang with 260 eng and generator. Purchased used when spouse was 16. Totally restored. Owned it 49 years. Recently, I have had my generator and oil light stay on after I turned off my car. Battery died last night and would not take a jump. Replaced battery due to bad cell. Car cranked up first time, but gen light stayed on even after turning off car and removing key. What could be the cause?
I am seeking an automatic transmission that will bolt right up to this mustang it has the original straight 6 cylinder motor which runs fine. i would need everything to easily bolt on. i do have a 3 speed standard transmission in working order in the car right now and if you want to swap out everything for everything i would gladly go that route as well
