How much does the 2024 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 6.65% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,303 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2024 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Yes — the 2024 BMW 5 Series earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 8/10.

The overview and test-drive data point to a midsize luxury sedan that leans hard into design, technology, and comfort. It comes across as a capable sports sedan that can also work as a plush people mover, but the driving enjoyment many BMW shoppers expect is notably missing from the recipe.

The main trade-offs are that the car is less engaging to drive than its badge suggests, and it gives up some practicality with limited cargo space when the spare tire is fitted. Even so, if you want a refined luxury sedan for commuting and long-distance comfort, this one fits that use case well.

Good and great deals account for 35.6% of listings, so there is meaningful room to shop selectively.

Is the 2024 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The available data points to a car that is built around refinement rather than drama. The powertrain is described as quiet and smooth, the automatic transmission shifts almost imperceptibly, and the suspension delivers a supple ride, all of which support an easy ownership experience.

BMW also includes complimentary scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the car’s high-tech systems and premium hardware can be expensive to live with if something goes wrong after the warranty period.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 BMW 5 Series?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a tech-heavy luxury sedan where repairs can get expensive. Focus on overall condition, because the car’s premium cabin, electronics, and ride components are the areas most likely to matter in day-to-day ownership.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 530i is the entry point, and the test data shows that it delivers the core luxury-car experience with the BMW Curved Display, iDrive 8.5, and a polished cabin. The M Sport treatment adds visual flair and a firmer suspension setup, but the base setup already carries the model’s main comfort and technology strengths.
• Powertrain: The 530i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, plus a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that helps efficiency. It is described as quiet, smooth, and capable in everyday driving.
• Safety package: Active Driving Assistant is standard and includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. BMW Assist eCall is also standard. The Driving Assistant Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, evasive steering assist, lane-change assist, emergency stop assist, Distance Control, and Highway Assistant with Active Lane Change.
• Infotainment: The cabin centers on a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen running BMW Operating System 8.5. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with connected services, a personal eSIM 5G connection, SiriusXM 360L, navigation, and wireless smartphone charging.
• Fuel efficiency: The test car returned 24.7 mpg on the evaluation loop and averaged 26.7 mpg during the week, while BMW estimates 30 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2024 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2024 BMW 5 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 530i and 540i.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the trim to start with if you want the core 5 Series experience at the lowest entry point. It brings the turbocharged four-cylinder, the curved-display tech, and the standard safety suite, so it covers the essentials without forcing you into a higher price bracket.
• 540i: Choose this if you want more power and are willing to pay for it. The available data identifies it as the higher gas-powered trim in the lineup, making it the better fit if you value stronger performance over the 530i’s more accessible pricing.

BMW’s standard safety package is Active Driving Assistant, and the more advanced driver-assistance features remain part of the optional Driving Assistant Professional Package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 BMW 5 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,303 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.65% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $43,641, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $43,641 sits slightly below last year's $46,750.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price, you reduce the risk of taking an immediate depreciation hit.

For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in strong condition, because premium sedans tend to reward clean history and careful maintenance. The current softness also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on trim, mileage, and overall presentation.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2024 BMW 5 Series earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW equips the 530i with Active Driving Assistant, which includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. BMW Assist eCall is also standard, adding automatic collision notification and an SOS emergency request button.

If you want more advanced assistance, the Driving Assistant Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, evasive steering assist, lane-change assist, emergency stop assist, Distance Control, and Highway Assistant with Active Lane Change. The main caveat is that the car does not earn the higher Top Safety Pick+ rating because it has not been assessed in a new moderate-overlap frontal-impact evaluation.

Should I buy a 2024 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.65% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2024 stands out for its redesigned cabin, curved-display tech, and comfort-first character, even if it gives up some of the classic BMW driving feel.

The bottom line: If you want the newest design, strong comfort, and a broad selection of used listings, the 2024 is the right path to consider. If your priority is maximizing value and you’re more price-sensitive than tech-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, especially if you can find a cleaner or cheaper example with the equipment you want.
