overall

Summary
With 100 currently listed for sale near San Diego, CA and an average price of $26,885, 47.0% of 2023 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda CX-5 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
100.0% of 2023 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 remains an appealing choice in its segment, thanks to its stylish design, fun-to-drive character, and strong safety ratings. It also has a reputation for comfort, performance, and features, and owners often praise its stylish interior with high-quality finishes, a user-friendly heads-up display, and ride quality and handling that feel well sorted.
At the same time, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 is living on borrowed time. Mazda made no changes beyond a new Rhodium White premium paint option, so this version is largely a carryover. Its drawbacks are worth noting, too: the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and the infotainment user interface is widely criticized. Some owners also mention fuel economy as a downside, especially for longer-distance driving.

This was the car my daughter wanted, and I can see why. Sharp exterior, especially the black wheels and trim against the blue/gray paint- it really pops! The interior is just as sharp with loads of features that would cost extra in other manufactures. Engine performance is nice, with sport and normal modes to save gas. She is ecstatic about it so that makes me ecstatic. I talked to many Mazda owners and read lots of reports/reviews. So far, the word on the street about their reliability, performance, presentation, costs, etc... is spot on. I bought a brand new Toyota RAV4 for myself a few months ago. If you are considering an SUV like that, you should also check out the Mazda models. Highly recommend, and I might have bought a Mazda myself if I had known more about them!!

I had been told to stick to Honda or Toyota for a practical car but I was frustrated having to go higher trims to get my dealbreakers like keyless entry or power seats. I also hadn’t been a fan of SUVs but wanted more cargo space, so I was looking for hatchbacks, but they are so hard to find. Thankfully a friend with this car suggested I try it- I was floored to see how many reasonably priced barely used options I had! And more importantly, the BASE model has everything I could want- keyless entry, power seats, heated seats, a great screen, and so much cargo space. I was comfortable driving this IMMEDIATELY despite never having an SUV. The seats being leather trim with suede centers are truly the best of both worlds. And I could care less than it doesn’t have a touch screen, because the control knob is amazing. I love that the base model has all these perks without a moonroof, which I truly did not want. The only downside I can think of is a less than stellar fuel economy, but I just don’t drive long enough distances for that to be much of a concern for me personally..

How much does the 2023 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,915 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,852.30 |
| Year-Round High | $26,274.23 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,274 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.37% |
Prices have softened 1.37% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 4,238 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $24,852.30, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.86/5 user rating, and our experts give it 7.17/10.
The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and features, along with the stylish interior, high-quality finishes, and user-friendly heads-up display. The ride quality and handling also draw positive remarks.
The trade-offs are familiar: the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and the infotainment interface is widely criticized.
For you, that means the CX-5 makes the most sense if you value a polished driving experience and upscale feel more than maximum space or tech simplicity. With 33.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as comfortable, dependable, and enjoyable to live with over time, with repeated praise for its performance and features. The review summary also points to a stylish interior and high-quality finishes, which usually help a vehicle feel well cared for as it ages.
The driving impression reinforces that sense of durability, with the CX-5 described as tight, solid, and refined on the road. Mazda also positions the model with premium-grade materials and attention to detail, which supports confidence in long-term ownership.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic dependability and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained well enough to preserve its comfort, electronics, and overall condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda CX-5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on cabin condition, cargo-area wear, and how well the infotainment and driver-assistance systems operate. Given the CX-5’s reputation for a cramped rear seat and limited cargo space, make sure the vehicle’s condition matches your practical needs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The CX-5 is styled and finished to feel more upscale than many compact crossovers, but the base version still leaves you with the same cramped back seat and limited cargo area that define the model.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, while the turbocharged version delivers up to 256 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel; both use a six-speed automatic and standard AWD.
- Safety package: Mazda’s i-Activsense suite is standard on most versions, while the 2.5 Turbo Signature adds the surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, rear low-speed automatic emergency braking, and Traffic Jam Assist.
- Infotainment: The CX-5 uses a 10.25-inch display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mazda Connected Services, but the interface is widely regarded as frustrating to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 26 mpg combined, while the turbocharged engine is rated at 24 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 8 trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Signature, 2.5 S Premium Plus, and the other versions explicitly referenced in the model-year content.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5 S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard engine, standard AWD, and the model’s upscale feel without pushing the price higher than necessary.
- 2.5 Turbo: This is the best-value choice if you want the strongest blend of performance and everyday appeal, because the turbocharged engine adds a major power boost without moving all the way to the top of the range.
- 2.5 S Premium Plus: Choose this if you want a more premium-feeling CX-5 with added equipment and you do not need the turbo engine’s extra punch.
- 2.5 Turbo Signature: This is the most luxurious and fully equipped version, with the most exclusive safety and convenience features, but it is the one to buy only if you want the highest-end CX-5 experience.
Mazda’s safety tech is broadly standard across the lineup, but the most exclusive driver-assistance features are reserved for the 2.5 Turbo Signature.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price softness to create opportunities.
- Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,238 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.37% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,852.30, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $25,915 sits slightly below last year's $26,274.
That softer pricing suggests the CX-5 has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stays steady. A model year that is already priced below its prior-year average may be easier to position competitively later, especially if you keep mileage and condition in check.
The current inventory mix also matters: when a vehicle has a meaningful share of good or great deals, buyers tend to stay engaged, which can support turnover. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 safe?
It earns five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment, coupled with a four-star rollover resistance rating, and the IIHS gives it a Top Safety Pick rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda’s i-Activsense suite is the core driver-assistance package, and it operates in a smooth, refined, and accurate manner. Standard and available features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic collision notification, and an Active Driving Display on higher trims. The 2.5 Turbo Signature adds the surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, rear low-speed automatic emergency braking, and Traffic Jam Assist.
One caveat is that some of the most useful convenience and parking aids are limited to the top trim, so you should check carefully if you want those features on a used example. The model also has a noted nighttime lighting issue, so it is worth confirming that the headlights and exterior lighting behave properly during a test drive.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the CX-5’s polished design, strong safety reputation, and fun-to-drive character while adding only minor changes for the year.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $24,219, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $25,915 average.
- It delivers a more upscale feel than many shoppers expect from a mainstream compact SUV.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $26,920, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $25,915 average.
- It benefits from continuous refinement that makes it feel better than ever.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and driving enjoyment, the 2023 is the smart default. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2022 can save you money while keeping much of the same appeal. If you want the newest nearby version and do not mind paying more, the 2024 is the cleaner upgrade path.
