CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Corolla
overall

Summary
With 155 currently listed for sale near San Jose, CA and an average price of $20,385, 40.6% of 2022 Toyota Corollas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Corolla 4.17 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Corolla remains a solid choice in the compact-car class because it gives buyers a lot of flexibility in a familiar, sensible package. Toyota offers it in sedan and hatchback body styles, with manual and automatic transmissions and multiple powertrain options, including a hybrid. For 2022, the only significant change is the addition of two new colors, Ruby Flare and Windchill Pearl.
That breadth of choice is a major part of the Corolla’s appeal, especially for shoppers who want a dependable, practical car without having to move up to something larger. It also comes with the expected array of trim levels, and the Corolla sedan is available in L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE grades, plus Apex Edition and Nightshade Edition versions of SE and XSE. At the same time, the Corolla is not trying to be the most exciting compact car on the road: the available technology is described as outdated, the design may be polarizing, and performance can feel sluggish.

Overall im happy with my purchase, it was a good car at a good price, there were a minor dent in the front lip that was conviently placed to be covered by the bottom of the ad, which is misleading but not a deal breaker.

Dependable and attractive design, with practical features so there isnt a bunch of added flash that you end up paying for. Wish there were more of these cars around so the demand would go down. These are higher priced due to demand for sure.

How much does the 2022 Toyota Corolla cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,665 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,157 |
| Year-Round High | $19,585 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,585 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.70% |
Prices have softened 4.70% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,210 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Generally — the 4.17/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.17/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its dependable design, practicality, and value for money, and many also appreciate the feature set. The trade-offs are familiar: the technology can feel outdated, the design may be polarizing, and performance can feel sluggish.
For you, that means the Corolla makes the most sense if you want a sensible compact car with broad configuration choices rather than the most exciting driving experience. Good and great deals account for 31.8% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback emphasizes dependable design, and the car is repeatedly described as practical and well worth the investment. The expert evaluation also frames it as a reliable and sensible compact car, with language that reinforces its long-term, trouble-free appeal.
Toyota’s ownership pitch is helped by the Corolla’s solid warranty coverage and its reputation for being easy to live with. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example that hasn’t been neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?
At 69.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because the Corolla’s appeal depends heavily on condition and value, you’ll want to focus on how the car was maintained and whether any accident damage was properly addressed.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L base model is the most basic version, while higher trims add more equipment and more distinctive styling. The SE and XSE bring a more aggressive look, and the Apex Edition adds a subtle body kit with bronze accents and model-specific 18-inch wheels.
- Powertrain: The Corolla L, LE, and XLE use a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque, while the SE and XSE use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. A CVT is mandatory with the smaller engine, and the 2.0-liter can also be paired with a six-speed manual on SE and SE Apex Edition models.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but not standard on all trim levels.
- Infotainment: The L gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while all other trim levels get an 8-inch screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, WiFi connectivity, Amazon Alexa integration, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system are standard, but wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine with CVT is rated at up to 34 mpg combined, and the manual-transmission SE Apex Edition is rated at 31 mpg combined. The Corolla Hybrid is rated at 52 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Corolla is offered in 7 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE, Apex Edition, and Nightshade Edition.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Corolla nameplate. You get the basic sedan formula, but the 7-inch touchscreen and simpler equipment make it the most stripped-down choice.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday usability without pushing you into the pricier sportier versions. It keeps the Corolla’s practical character while giving you a more balanced ownership experience.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling Corolla with the stronger feature set implied by the higher trim position. It suits you best if comfort and convenience matter more than sporty styling.
- SE: This is the trim to target if you want the Corolla’s more engaging personality. It gets the 2.0-liter engine, and it’s the gateway to the manual transmission, which makes it the most appealing choice for drivers who want a little more involvement.
- XSE: This is the most fully equipped mainstream Corolla sedan trim and also one of the trims eligible for the available premium audio system. It’s the right pick if you want the strongest mix of features, style, and equipment.
- Apex Edition: This is the sportiest Corolla variant in this model year, with a lowered suspension, unique coil springs, solid stabilizer bars, and a sport exhaust system. It suits you if you want sharper handling and can live with the firmer ride.
- Nightshade Edition: This is the appearance-focused choice, adding blacked-out trim for a darker look without changing the Corolla’s core mission.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but it isn’t standard on all trim levels.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?
The market looks moderate and selective, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,210 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.70% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,157, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $18,665 sits slightly below last year's $19,585.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to ease. The Corolla’s broad appeal and practical reputation should help support demand, especially for clean, well-equipped examples.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla safe?
The 2022 Toyota Corolla earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and four-star ratings in rollover crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 brings forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but it isn’t standard on all trim levels.
The main caveat is that the headlights received lower IIHS ratings depending on trim level, so you should pay attention to the specific configuration you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 adds two new colors, Ruby Flare and Windchill Pearl, while keeping the Corolla’s broad mix of body styles, transmissions, and powertrains.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,107, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $18,665 average.
- It blends affordability, reliability, and efficiency with a more engaging SE and XSE character.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping opportunity, the 2022 is the stronger pick because it combines softer pricing, broad inventory, and strong safety. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better value path, especially if you’re comfortable giving up some of the 2022’s market freshness.
