It’s not often that we get an all-new vehicle from an all-new manufacturer, but in 2022, newcomer Rivian started making deliveries of its latest vehicle, the R1S. The 2022 Rivian R1S is an all-electric SUV designed to hold seven passengers and their luggage. It shares a reported 91 percent of its components with the R1T—a pickup—and is said to be extremely stable and load-friendly thanks to its low center of gravity.

While Rivian plans to offer the R1S in a dual-motor configuration in the near future (it’s listed on the current version of the website), in 2022, the only configuration for purchase was the Quad Motor.

The Quad Motor uses four traction motors developed by Bosch. This setup provides not only full-time all-wheel drive (AWD) but also torque vectoring for better handling. The Quad Motor configuration produces 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque, which splits almost 50/50 between the front and rear wheels, with a very slight bias toward the rear.

The Rivian R1S was only available with one battery offering in 2022, known as the Large Pack, which offers 321 miles of EPA-estimated range.

Look for all of the standard features you’d expect in a premium SUV, including Bluetooth connectivity, adaptive cruise control, power hatch release and pull-down, two massive displays, a Wi-Fi network, and a wireless charging pad, along with advanced features like Driver+ hands-free driving assistance, automatic braking, lane keeping, and over-the-air (OTA) updates for software features.

The Rivian R1S is limited to a single trim level for the 2022 model year.

Initially, the plans were to offer Explore and Adventure trims, but Rivian ditched the Explore trim by summer of 2022 to focus on the more expensive Adventure. There was also a $90,000 Launch Edition, which included special badging and Launch Green paint. Rivian has not provided solid numbers on how many were produced.

You can have any $0 paint color you want on your 2022 Rivian R1S, as long as it’s LA Silver. Each of the other eight colors comes with an extra charge: Glacier White, Limestone, and Forest Green are all $1,750. Red Canyon, Midnight, Rivian Blue, El Cap Granite, and Compass Yellow are all $2,500.

In addition to the standard 21-inch road wheels, the R1S is available with five different wheel styles in 20-inch or 22-inch sizes. The optional wheels range from $2,500 to $3,500, depending on the finish.

The all-white Ocean Coast interior styling option is $2,000, as are two of the ash wood interior styles.

A reinforced skid plate runs $2,000, and a Level 2 wall charger good for 25 miles of charge every hour is priced at $750.

The 2022 Rivian R1S Adventure is offered at a base price of $78,000. However, “options” include the mandatory Quad Motor setup at $8,000 and the mandatory Large Pack battery at $6,000, which bring the total MSRP up to $92,000.
