Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW 3 Series stands out as a luxury sedan that blends BMW’s traditional sporty character with a stronger emphasis on comfort and convenience than earlier generations. It is also part of a lineage that helped redefine what a luxury car could be, and its current form continues to appeal to buyers who want a sedan with nimble driving dynamics and a reputation for solid engineering.
For 2021, the biggest change is the addition of the 330e plug-in hybrid model to the lineup. That gives the 3 Series an extra layer of appeal for shoppers interested in efficiency without giving up the sedan format. BMW also offers other versions in the lineup, and the car’s strengths include great handling and impressive technology.
At the same time, the 2021 BMW 3 Series is described as competent but unremarkable, and advanced safety features are not standard. That makes it a strong choice for buyers who value driving feel and a polished overall package, but less compelling if standard safety equipment is a top priority.

Extremely responsive car with Good fuel economy. Driving assist system is extremely helpful as well. The audio is somewhat lacking (speakers) but NOT a deterrent to the car at all.

The car is beautiful, but I couldn’t buy it because it was making noises when I drove it. I can’t buy a car that I need to bring to the shop as soon as I get it.

How much does the 2021 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,432 |
| Year-Round Low | $25,361 |
| Year-Round High | $28,553 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,509 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.79% |
Prices have softened 10.79% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,492 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of cars to compare.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2021 BMW 3 Series earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the exceptional handling, powerful performance, luxurious interior, fuel economy, and trunk space. That lines up with the overview of a sedan that balances comfort and convenience with BMW’s sporty reputation.
The main trade-offs are that the car is described as competent but unremarkable, and advanced safety features are not standard. In practical terms, you’re looking at a well-rounded luxury sedan that suits you best if you want everyday polish more than drama.
Only 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market has some value opportunities but still rewards careful shopping.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that many drivers trust for its exceptional handling, powerful performance, luxurious interior, fuel economy, and trunk space. That kind of feedback suggests you can count on the 3 Series to deliver a polished ownership experience over time.
The expert notes also emphasize solid engineering and a comfortable, composed chassis, which supports the impression of a dependable sedan. BMW’s standard warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles, with four years of free roadside assistance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that luxury-car ownership can bring higher repair and maintenance exposure once warranty coverage ends.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 3 Series?
At 73.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage affected the structure, airbags, or safety systems. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on a luxury sedan like this, since equipment and option content can vary a lot from car to car.
Pay close attention to how the car drives, how the electronics behave, and whether the cabin shows signs of heavy wear. Because advanced safety features are not standard, you should also verify exactly which driver-assistance equipment is installed on the specific car you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The standard Sport Line trim package comes with 18-inch wheels, while the optional M Sport package adds M 19-inch wheels and blue-painted brake calipers; the interior uses synthetic Sensatec as standard, with leather upholstery optional.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the 330i, a plug-in hybrid 330e with electric assist and limited all-electric range, and a turbo inline-six in the M340i; all use an eight-speed automatic.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning are standard, while the Driving Assistant Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automated lane centering, stop-and-go capability, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Active Side Collision Avoidance.
- Infotainment: The standard system has an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and two USB ports; gasoline models get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the 330e only gets CarPlay. Live Cockpit Professional adds a digital instrument cluster and navigation, and a head-up display is available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 330i is rated at 30 mpg combined, the 330i xDrive at 28 mpg combined, the M340i at 26 mpg combined, and the M340i xDrive at 25 mpg combined. The 330e is rated at 75 MPGe in electric mode with RWD and 67 MPGe with AWD, with hybrid-mode ratings of 28 mpg combined and 25 mpg combined, respectively.
Which 2021 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW 3 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the most straightforward choice if you want the core 3 Series experience at the lowest entry point. It gives you the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the standard infotainment setup, and the best starting price in the lineup, making it the best-value trim for most shoppers.
- 330e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup and are willing to trade some simplicity for efficiency-minded driving. It adds electric-assist capability and limited all-electric range, but the expert notes say it can feel less satisfying under hard acceleration.
- M340i: Pick this if you want the strongest performance in the range. Its turbo inline-six and quicker acceleration make it the enthusiast choice, but it sits at the top of the lineup and is the least budget-friendly.
The safety package is worth checking carefully on any trim, since advanced driver-assistance features are not standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 3 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,492 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.79% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,361, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $25,432 sits slightly below last year's $28,509.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price now, you reduce the chance of taking a bigger depreciation hit later.
Because the year-round range still reaches $28,553, well-kept examples with desirable equipment can hold stronger value than average. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2021 BMW 3 Series got a “Top Safety Pick” award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with top “Good” scores in all crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard driver-assistance list includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. A lower-level Driving Assistant Package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Driving Assistant Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automated lane centering, stop-and-go functionality, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Active Side Collision Avoidance.
A key caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, and the optional Active Driving Assistant Professional system scored lower than the base system in vehicle-to-pedestrian front-crash prevention.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.79% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- BMW’s test-drive summary says the car is competent but unremarkable, with comfort and convenience taking priority.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $23,883, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $25,432 average.
- It emphasizes driver-focused performance and everyday comfort.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $28,526, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $25,432 average.
- Every 3 Series gets Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation with navigation.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, satisfaction, and current-market availability, the 2021 is the primary path to consider. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2020 is the better value play; if you want a slightly newer setup and don’t mind paying more, the 2022 is the alternative to compare.
