Summary

Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Corolla stands out by adding style and a bit of excitement to a nameplate long associated with affordability, reliability, efficiency, and practicality. It is still presented as a compact sedan that is cheap to buy, dependable, thrifty with fuel, and roomy enough for a frugal family, but the redesigned version brings a more engaging personality to that familiar formula.
That broader appeal is reinforced by a few notable strengths: a manual transmission is available, premium interior materials are part of the package, and advanced safety features come standard. Owners also praise its excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value for the price. The main drawback noted in the test-drive data is uncomfortable seats, and some owners also mention that the sound insulation could be better and that back legroom is a bit tight.

I bought a 2020 Toyota Corolla LE and owned it for about a year and a half. It rides smooth, has great safety features, and is amazing with gas mileage. I was averaging a combined 36.7mpg everywhere I went. I’ve never owned a vehicle so new, so getting used to the fancy new cruise control that matches the speed of the vehicle in front of you took some getting used to. The lane assist was a really cool feature! However, I live in the desert of New Mexico, so if the sun hits the road just right, it’ll bounce off the painted stripes and make it unrecognizable to the sensors. Other than that, it’s a great feature! For a compact car, it has enough space for a single person or a family of two or three. Spacious cargo bay! The leg room is a little tight in the back, especially if the driver or passenger scoots back a little. That being said, I was hoping the seats would be a little more comfy being a 2020 model. Kinda stiff and not super comfortable for 1hr+ rides. Not bad, but could be better. All in all, this is a great car with great safety features that I would recommend to anyone, even a new driver thanks to the warning systems aboard! Love it.

It is a manual transmission. I was searching for the S PLUS model but since they were discontinued, I saw that this model was similar (smart key/push button starter) That is a plus, you will never lock your car with the keys inside. Mainly (the manual Transmission) I have been driving manual transmission for over 30 years, I wish they would never stop making them. I am very impressed with Corollas because of there reliability. The prevoius 3 vehicles all have been Corollas Manual Transmission, the last one was a 2015 S PLUS model I purchased in February 2018 with 54K miles on it. It currently has 391K and I never had a break down or been stranded, not even the clutch, all Ive done was change the oil every 5K, tires, battery, breaks, shocks and struts when needed. Corolla is an excellent reliable vehicle.

How much does the 2020 Toyota Corolla cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,562 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,785.99 |
| Year-Round High | $16,892.40 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,885 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.91% |
Prices have softened 1.91% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,286 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $15,785.99, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Corolla earns a 4.69/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise its excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value for the price. The expert review also points to a more engaging personality than older Corollas, along with premium interior materials and a manual transmission option.
The trade-offs are familiar compact-car compromises: uncomfortable seats, some road noise, and tighter back legroom. In practical terms, that means you should like this Corolla most if you want a frugal daily driver with more style and personality than the nameplate’s old reputation suggests.
Only 24.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the best examples may take some searching.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.69/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback emphasizes reliable performance, excellent fuel economy, and a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience. The expert review also describes the Corolla as dependable and thrifty, which lines up with the way shoppers typically use this car: as a low-stress commuter that should be easy to count on.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and that kind of broad standard safety coverage usually supports confidence in everyday ownership. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the Corolla’s basic durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, alignment, tires, and interior wear. Because comfort complaints show up in owner feedback, pay close attention to seat condition and how the cabin feels on a longer test drive. It also makes sense to confirm that the safety and infotainment features you want are actually present on the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L trim is the most basic version, while LE and XLE add more comfort and convenience, and SE and XSE bring a sportier look and more premium cabin feel. The base setup is the one most likely to leave you wanting more equipment.
- Powertrain: L, LE, and XLE use a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 139 horsepower and a CVT, while SE and XSE upgrade to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 169 horsepower and a more sophisticated CVT. The SE also offers a 6-speed manual if you want a more engaging drive.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE, optional on LE and SE, and it does not include rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The Corolla uses Entune 3.0 with Apple CarPlay, but not Android Auto. LE and higher get an 8-inch display instead of a 7-inch screen, and wireless device charging is available on XSE and XLE.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2020 Corolla test car returned 31 mpg city, 38 highway, and 34 combined. The hybrid LE is rated at 52 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the simplest way into the Corolla, and it makes sense if your priority is keeping the purchase price down. You still get the core Corolla formula, but you give up the nicer materials and extra convenience features that make the higher trims easier to live with.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday usability without pushing the price into the sportier upper end. It also gets the larger 8-inch display, which makes the cabin feel more modern.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale Corolla with more comfort and convenience. It is also one of the trims that can be paired with wireless device charging.
- SE: This is the trim to pick if you want the Corolla to feel more engaging. It adds the 2.0-liter engine, sportier styling, and the available 6-speed manual, which gives the car more personality.
- XSE: This is the most complete and most premium-feeling gas Corolla in the lineup, with the stronger engine, upscale interior touches, and available wireless charging. It suits you best if you want the sportiest and most polished version.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE, and optional on LE and SE.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 24.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,286 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.91% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,785.99, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $16,562 sits slightly below last year's $16,885.
That kind of softening suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers than sellers. If you own one, you may not see rapid appreciation, but the Corolla’s broad appeal should help it remain easy to move when you decide to sell. Strong demand for efficient, reliable compact sedans tends to support steady resale performance even when prices drift lower in the short term.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla safe?
The 2020 Corolla earns a five-star frontal-impact rating from NHTSA, and the IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, with low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Lane Tracing Assist works with adaptive cruise control to help keep the car centered in its lane, and blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE, optional on LE and SE.
One caveat is that the lane-departure warning uses an aural alert that can be irritating, and blind-spot monitoring does not include rear cross-traffic alert. That means the Corolla is well equipped for safety, but you should still verify which driver-assistance features are present on the specific trim you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 24.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.91% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a more engaging personality, plus standard advanced safety features and a manual transmission option.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,154, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $16,562 average.
- It adds the Apex Edition, which brings a track-tuned sport suspension and a lowered ride height.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines lower pricing with strong owner satisfaction and a broad safety package. If you care more about the newer-year premium and the Apex Edition’s extra sportiness, the 2021 is the path to consider, but you’ll pay more for it.
