CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Nissan Versa
overall

Summary
With 72 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $11,216, 23.6% of 2020 Nissan Versas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Nissan Versa 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Nissan Versa stands out as a budget-minded small car that feels more substantial than its price tag might suggest. Nissan says the all-new Versa costs a couple of thousand dollars more than last year’s version, but the added expense is justified by improved infotainment, better safety tech, and a livelier ride. That combination gives it a stronger appeal than a bare-bones economy car, especially for buyers who want value without feeling like they are giving up every modern convenience.
It also earns points for standard advanced safety features, which is a notable advantage in this class. At the same time, it is not trying to hide its compromises: performance is fairly pedestrian, and the back seat is cramped. Even so, the 2020 Nissan Versa’s mix of value, comfort, technology, and fuel efficiency makes it a compelling choice for shoppers focused on keeping costs down while still getting a car that feels thoughtfully equipped.

Best value for the money especially on SR version. Comfortable ride n seats fuel efficient engine with much much more reliable cvt hands down. The car has so much technology that is a steal and even thoughtful ones . First new car option is perfect. Its much more attractive looks is perfect on SR. While its not an Maxima in performance its just right for daily commute. One thing I recommend is to swap out rear drums for rotors or brakes like the front. Its just my opinion in terms of improving the stopping power. It takes so much pressure to stop it and long distance too.

I think it’s a great car for the money. Has all the features like the higher end model vehicles does. Drives great handles, great and great on gas. The 2020 Vesra is a huge improvement.

The user feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with drivers repeatedly calling out its value, comfort, and fuel efficiency in a way that suggests it’s easy to live with over time. The expert review also emphasizes that the Versa gives you more for your money than the old model, which supports the idea that it’s a sensible long-term budget choice.
The powertrain is described as improved and decent rather than exciting, which is usually a good sign for everyday dependability because you’re not buying into a high-strung setup. The cost-effectiveness review also notes that the new Versa comes with the full warranty of a new car, which can reduce early ownership risk for used buyers who are still within coverage.
For used shoppers, the main long-term risk is less about outright reliability drama and more about whether the car has been used hard or neglected, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Nissan Versa?
At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any signs of prior bodywork or uneven wear. Focus on overall condition, because the Versa’s value proposition depends heavily on whether it still feels clean, well-kept, and properly maintained.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S comes with 15-inch steel wheels and plastic hubcaps, while the SV adds 16-inch alloys, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, upgraded cloth, and a better infotainment setup. The SR adds 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a unique dark-chrome grille design, automatic climate control, and passive-entry key access.
- Powertrain: The Versa uses a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. You can get a 5-speed manual on the S or a CVT on the SV and SR, and the CVT is described as the better everyday match.
- Safety package: Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. Standard safety equipment also includes a reversing camera, front- and side-impact airbags, and Nissan's Easy Fill Tire Alert.
- Infotainment: The base car has a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, Siri Eyes Free, a hands-free text-messaging assistant, and three USB ports. The SV adds NissanConnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus an upgraded instrument panel with a large color display.
- Fuel efficiency: With the manual transmission, the Versa returns 27 mpg city, 35 highway, and 30 combined. With the CVT, it returns 32/40/35.
Which 2020 Nissan Versa trim should I buy?
The 2020 Nissan Versa is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SV, and SR.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the least expensive way into the Versa, but it is also the most stripped-down. You get the basics, including the 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and standard safety tech, but the cabin and equipment list are intentionally simple.
- SV: This is the best-value trim. It adds the CVT, 16-inch alloys, heated mirrors, upgraded cloth, NissanConnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the more useful digital-style instrument display, making it the sweet spot for most shoppers.
- SR: This is the most feature-rich version, with 17-inch alloys, fog lights, automatic climate control, passive entry, and a more distinctive look. It makes sense if you want the nicest Versa experience and are willing to pay more for it.
Safety content highlights standard driver-assistance features across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core safety package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Nissan Versa?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 694 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.52% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,839, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Nissan Versa's resale value?
The current average of $11,435 sits slightly below last year's $12,103.
That tells you the market has softened, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. A lower current average price usually means future resale upside is more limited unless the car is especially clean, well-equipped, and well maintained.
For a future seller, the key is to preserve condition and documentation so your car stands out in a value-driven segment. Because shoppers in this class are price sensitive, a clean history and strong presentation can matter a lot when it’s time to list.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Nissan Versa safe?
The 2020 Nissan Versa earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
It adds a host of standard driver-assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. Standard safety equipment also includes a reversing camera, a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, and Nissan's Easy Fill Tire Alert.
That standard safety content is a real strength for the class, especially because you do not have to climb far up the trim ladder to get it. The main caveat is that the car’s safety tech can add repair cost exposure in a minor collision, since sensor-equipped systems can be more expensive to fix.
Should I buy a 2020 Nissan Versa or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.52% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model year stands out for its improved infotainment, better safety tech, and livelier ride.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, safety tech, and everyday livability, the 2020 Versa is the year to target. If your top priority is simply spending as little as possible, you may want to compare it carefully with older or cheaper alternatives, but the 2020 is the better pick if you want a small car that feels more complete.
