CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Nissan Sentra
overall

Summary
With 1,718 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,867.00, 26.9% of 2020 Nissan Sentras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Nissan Sentra 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
61.6% of 2020 Sentra models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Nissan Sentra stands out by making a compact sedan feel more upscale than its basic-car reputation might suggest. Nissan describes it as redefining basic so it no longer means bad, and says the eighth-generation Sentra has the look of a larger, more luxurious car. It also reflects major upgrades in style, technology, and driving dynamics, which helps explain why it feels like more than just an entry-level sedan.
For buyers, the 2020 Sentra’s appeal is rooted in value and equipment. The test-drive data highlights excellent value for money, standard advanced safety features, and stylish design. That combination makes it easy to understand why it would attract shoppers looking for a well-equipped compact sedan without stretching their budget. At the same time, its main drawback is straightforward: performance is fairly pedestrian, so drivers prioritizing quick acceleration or a more energetic feel may find it less satisfying than its styling and features suggest.
Owners’ feedback lines up with that balance, praising the car’s beautiful design, smooth ride, excellent fuel economy, and impressive gadgets and safety features for the price. Some also noted that power could be improved, especially acceleration and engine responsiveness, which reinforces the Sentra’s role as a practical, comfort-focused choice rather than a performance-oriented one.

Reviewed a 2020 Nissan SV FWD on Oct 25, 2023
Ive been very pleased with my 2015 Altima, so I looked to Nissan again when I decided to move up to a later model with the latest safety features. I found that the Sentra, starting with the 2020 model, has close to the same safety features of the Altima at a better price point. I bought a low mileage 2020 Sentra SV with the Premium Package to get the leather seats and other comforts, and Ive been very pleased with the car so far. The 2.0 liter engine isnt quite as responsive as the Altimas 2.5, but certainly adequate with the CVT transmission and very economical.

The owner feedback points to a car people feel good about living with over time, with repeated praise for its smooth ride, excellent fuel economy, and overall satisfaction with the purchase. The review summary also emphasizes that many drivers see it as a dependable, trouble-free choice, even if a few mention minor issues.
The test-drive notes reinforce that impression by describing the CVT as smooth and responsive, with engine noise and vibration kept mostly at bay. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about durability and more about whether the car’s modest performance will meet your expectations.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Nissan Sentra?
At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or paint mismatch. Focus on overall condition and how well the car has been maintained, since the Sentra’s value proposition depends heavily on getting a clean, well-kept example.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The mid-level SV stands out for its larger screens, dual-zone climate control, proximity-entry key, adaptive cruise control, remote engine start, and standard smartphone integration, while the SV Premium Package adds quilted tan leather and brighter exterior details. The base setup is more basic inside, so you should pay close attention to whether the features you want are actually included.
- Powertrain: A 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 149 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque works with a CVT and front-wheel drive. It is smooth and efficient, but acceleration tapers off after 30 mph, so you should expect relaxed rather than energetic performance.
- Safety package: Nissan’s standard driver-assistance suite includes forward and reverse emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, auto high beams, and a driver attention monitor. Rear side airbags and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger are also standard across the lineup.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and WiFi come standard on the SV, along with larger screens and two extra USB ports, including USB-C. Navigation and wireless charging are not offered.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA ratings are 29 mpg city, 39 highway, and 33 combined, with the SR returning 1 mpg less in the city and combined and 2 less on the highway.
Which 2020 Nissan Sentra trim should I buy?
The 2020 Nissan Sentra is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SV, SR.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but the available information points to the SV as the smarter buy if you want the best balance of price and equipment.
- SV: This is the best-value trim. It adds the larger screens, smartphone integration, WiFi, dual-zone climate control, proximity entry, adaptive cruise control, and remote engine start, making it the trim most buyers should target.
- SR: Choose this if you want the sportier appearance and the extra exterior equipment, including 18-inch wheels and fog lights, but it is not presented as a performance upgrade.
The standard safety package includes rear side airbags, knee airbags, forward and reverse emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, auto high beams, and a driver attention monitor on every trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Nissan Sentra?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price softness to reward patience.
- Deal availability: 23.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,735 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.80% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,107.08, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Nissan Sentra's resale value?
The current average of $14,932 sits slightly below last year's $15,362.
That softer pricing suggests the Sentra is in a buyer-friendly phase right now, which can make it easier for you to purchase well but may also limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect your future resale position.
The model’s value story still works in its favor because it offers strong equipment and broad appeal at a lower price than many rivals. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Nissan Sentra safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Nissan includes a full suite of standard driver-assistance features on every Sentra trim, including forward and reverse emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, auto high beams, and a driver attention monitor. Rear side airbags and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger are also standard, which is a notable advantage in this class.
The main caveat is that neither NHTSA nor IIHS has crash-tested this model year, so you do not get official crash-test results to lean on. Even so, the standard safety equipment is extensive, and the expert assessment expects strong results.
Should I buy a 2020 Nissan Sentra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 23.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.80% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model year brings a major redesign with a more upscale look, stronger technology, and improved driving dynamics.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $15,564, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $14,932 average.
- It builds on the 2020 redesign with a more polished feel and a smart, upscale presentation.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the stronger buy because it already delivers the redesign, the equipment, and the softer market pricing. If you are willing to spend more for a slightly more polished version of the same formula, the 2021 is the cleaner follow-up choice.
