The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport helped define the subcompact crossover segment when it debuted for 2010. The Outlander Sport returns for 2020 with a simplified trim lineup. It competes with newer vehicles like the Ford EcoSport, Hyundai Kona, and Nissan Rogue Sport. Mitsubishi offers two engine choices for the Outlander Sport. The standard unit is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder that makes 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The bigger 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, which makes 168 hp and 167 lb-ft, is available as an option. Last year’s standard 5-speed manual transmission is no longer available for 2020. Now, all trims benefit from a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Across the range, front-wheel drive (FWD) comes standard, while all-wheel drive (AWD) with a drive-mode selector is an option. Fuel-economy returns reach as high as 24 mpg city, 30 highway, and 27 combined. The Outlander Sport’s previous LE trim disappears for 2020, leaving just the ES, SP, SE, and GT trims. The base ES trim bundles 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, LED taillights, Bluetooth connectivity, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and a 7.0-inch infotainment system. The SE gets LED fog lights, automatic headlights, gloss-black-and-chrome exterior appointments, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry and start, 6 speakers, power-folding side mirrors, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and a new 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Finally, the GT trim gets the 2.4-liter engine, premium upholstery, garage-door openers, and black roof rails. The Outlander Sport’s standard safety equipment includes just a reversing camera. The jump to the SE trim gets you rain-sensing front wipers, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-change assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Outlander Sport middling crash-test scores in 2019. The Outlander Sport offers a few updates, but it continues to face tough competition.
